Electric winch question
« on: December 10, 2022, 02:44:09 PM »
The winch on my sxs started bleeding off today while plowing snow. Is there anyway to stop this or tighten something inside. Hardly has any hours on the winch at all since this is the first year I've used it. It's a CanAm Terra 45 winch

The winch brake got weak, not sure if you can rebuild it  :dunno:

that's a call to the manufacturer, has it held before for a long time then got weak? Or did you just install it and it's just not strong enough?

You could remove all the winch line on the drum and use a short line, making the drum smaller in circumference, and therefore your holding power

The winch has been on the machine for a couple years but never been used. Just started plowing with it and this was the 2nd snow storm where it dumped enough to use it. I never leave the plow up in the air when it's not being used.

What do you mean "bleeding off"?  Electric winches on 4-wheelers and SxS's don't have any type of brake, it is all planetary gearing.  Is the cable dropping down through the underlying wraps of cable?  If that is the case then the winch cable needs to be wound onto the drum tighter.  If the weight of the plow is too heavy for the winch, it may override the gearing and motor and pull the cable out, never have I seen this happen.

When I lift the plow, it slowly starts unwinding and dropping down. I did see the the cable should be coming off the bottom and not the top or it's wound backwards. Mine is coming off the top so I believe it's wound backwards and it could be fixed by winding it the otherwise. I bought the machine with ut wound this way, so no hate lol

Electric winches do have brakes.
