Tacoma Deer Salvage Opportunity - S. 12th and S. Warner
« on: December 10, 2022, 05:43:18 PM »
Just drove past a fresh hit deer near the corner listed above. Across the street from Franklin Park. TPD was on the scene. Officer just getting out of patrol car to dispatch the deer. Looked like a big doe or young buck. Paralyzed. 5:35 PM

All depends on the situation. Plenty of animals are dispatched within the city limits of larger cities.

He didn't have a firearm out. He was standing over the paralyzed deer (deer was lying on its side on the sidewalk with his head up looking at him). I assumed he was going to dispatch it, but maybe not? What do they do in that situation? Call in someone else?

(e) An individual may not kill an injured or wounded animal that they encounter for the purpose of salvage. Only a law enforcement officer or individuals or entities authorized by the department may euthanize an animal injured in a motor vehicle collision and that deer or elk may be taken for salvage
WAC 220-400-040

Sounds like that is what they do

We saw a deer get hit on I-90 a few years ago, he couldn’t go anywhere and was blocking the right hand lane.  I chose to put the deer out of its misery and get the lane open, stupid laws have to be broken sometimes, common sense isn’t allowed anymore.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

I have had both WDFW and Sheriff tell me (salvage) to dispatch and take if safe to do so. I presume that means I was 'authorized'.

I've "euthanized" multiple deer vs vehicle situations...I just called the local sheriff's depts and reported it...they were fine with it.  Drug them off the road if needed.  Less they have to deal with it

Problem is, most of us would be fine dispatching an animal on the road but there is gunna be that dumb a who rattles off a bunch of rounds and hits a car goin by. It’s a liability thing I’m sure.

 :yeah:

At my wife's grandma's house a few years ago a Puyallup city police officer needed 5 rounds to dispatch a small doe that had broken a leg and was wedged between a garage and fence. Not a good scene at all from the reports.

Drove past the site again yesterday afternoon. No sign of the deer. However it happened...the animal was removed.
