Goose loads
« on: December 15, 2022, 07:58:01 AM »
Just curious, I am not a goose hunter but am taking a friend this weekend.

What loads do you like for them? My shotgun is a Remington 11-87 Super Magnum and can take up to 3 1/2” shells. Currently I have 2 boxes of 3” #2 shot. In town here they have a few cases of 3” BB. Is that a better load? I shoot full choke if that matters but could put something else in.

The second picture is from my blind to the water I am hunting. It’s maybe 25 yards.

3" 2s are plenty fine for geese. Just shoot what you have.

Your 3" 2's should work fine on any decoying shots. I use 3" BB's most commonly in my own goose hunting. If you think your shots will be higher passing shots maybe upsize to the BB's. Just remember, geese seem like they are flying slower because they are so much bigger than ducks. In reality they are flying as fast as ducks, don't forget to lead them! Enjoy!

I completely folded a BIG goose out far pass shooting with 3 inch 3s in Hevi metal. Typically I’ll use 3.5 inch Hevi shot in B size.

I'd buy the BB loads for sure.

You can debate max ethical range for #2 and max ethical range for BB, but I don't think there's much debate that max ethical range for BB is greater than for #2.

I'd buy the BBs. I would also use a Modified choke. A lot of geese have been killed with #2s, but I feel BBs are better for the big birds. My favorite 12ga waterfowl load is 3", 1 3/8oz BB. Hard to find 1 3/8oz anymore. Been shooting 1 1/4oz loads. Have a great time!!

#2s would work fine, BBs might work a little finer

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and picked up the 3" BB. I figure if I start hunting geese more than this weekend I will want more ammo anyway. I can save the #2 for duck days or mix and match.

All these opinions, but I have been holding back my  :twocents:.  Nobody mentioned T shot.  I was hooked on that load with my 10 guage for honkers.

LOL

We shot a lot of decoyed geese with T shot.

Seems silly just to type that.

I shoot 3in #3 shot at ducks and geese. The biggest factor is how they pattern. I have had loads where #2 show great but bb sucked pattern wise. Bb will extend your range a bit but I like to kill them close.
