Any tips or tricks for getting a choke tube out of a shogun?

I think I would find one of the many break free products and soak it over night.
I worry about this problem often ,so I keep them oiled up.

I guess the second worry would to use something that won’t effect the blueing.

Might try a little light heat after soaking , hair dryer maybe?

Uh oh! Many suggestions offered on shotgun world.com. Most revolve around a long soak in penetrating oil/solvent and gentle application of heat. Good luck!

I put grease on mine ,just old grease out the grease gun.
Fill the threads ,screw it in,wipe out any extra.
I also worry,but haven't had a problem yet.
I don't waterfowl though,just turkey and grouse.

I had this happen to me. I let mine soak in a breakaway solvent for a couple days and I was able to slowly get it out. And I mean actually soak in it, not just spray on it. I'm much more religious about cleaning them now. I didn't try heat but that might have helped.

Last one I had,  done with a heat gun(hair dryer) tight choke tube wrench and steady pressure.  Took almost an hour. Once it started to move, worked it back and forth for a while.  Oil and grease over time becomes "glue" especially if the tubes haven't been completely removed and cleaned in a while!!  Mine was a Browning invector +, used a Beretta wrench(fit tighter) and being of metal construction, was able to put a cheater on the handle.

Hint: once out, quit using oils and grease as tube lube.  Use the copper anti seize by permatex.  When not shooting, turn choke tube out a few turns.  When using shotgun, tubes only need a snug turn in. Clean based on how much shooting you do.

I've had it happen a few times usually on trips with a lot of altitude changes. I use Q-Max to free them up, regular or commercial. The company that makes the chokes (Muller Chokes) I use recommends Q-Max.

I just wanted to bring up something from past experience. I ran a 3inch duck load. Remington Hypersonic loads at 1700fps. I never had any issues running loads at 1550 fps for probably 7 years. As soon as I put a box of that through my gun my choke swelled. I was never able to get it out. Gun smith couldn't get it out either. I tried all options. Just a thought. Not sure what you have been shooting through the gun. And something to think about for members in the future. Those super high speed loads. Make sure gun and choke is compatable with such.

Geez.
Mine seized probably 12 years ago.
soaked it in everything I could think of.
Wrenched it night after night while soaking for weeks.

Ga ve up.

anything I shoot with it now gets that choke tube.

you all might have inspired me to try some more.

:yeah: I did the same with my Browning gold. Soaked it for weeks in Kroil, put heat to it and everything in between. Bought a choke remover tool to try and it was so seized in there I ended up cracking the end of my barrel. The only good that came out of it was better preventative maintenance and an excuse for a new upgraded shotgun  :chuckle:

As others has pointed out, some type of penetrating oil, and heat.  Heat the barrel near the choke threads.

Do not heat the choke.  In fact, you could apply ice to the choke tube.  You want the barrel side to expand and the choke side to contract.

Freeze the barrel, then heat the outside while trying to turn it (after soaking in breakfree).

have not had this happen yet ***

my biggest fear would be the rib.  i watch some videos and the gunsmiths discuss the correct clamp jig to hold barrel to not "pinch barrel " or destroy rib.

have seen a couple attempts to free tubes, both resulted in new barrels due to (imo) lack of patience or improper grip/ vise point on barrel. I take mine out and lube regularly but i have often and have always just fingered them back in not over tightening. I have often wondered if a lose tube walking out the barrel could result in bulge problems below the threads of tube and barrel (area of tube below threads) if allowed to unscrew more than just a quarter turn or so.

Good luck
