Time to start a new thread for the new year.

I had a pack of 4 in my scope yesterday, but no shot opportunity.  Coyotes: 1, Me: 0.

I'm on the board for 2023!  Coyote came through my driveway this evening. .223, 50gr V-max. 50 yds.

Picked up my first for 2023 this morning. Good sized male.

So far I have had cameras set through known coyote spots in the past from us. It seems a female that was there in December moved out after we got the big male. No activity at all since the start of the new year. That spot took 4 coyotes last season. But will see how it goes. Weather being a little rainy of a forcast will keep me out of the coyote game until it dries up or I see action locally at that camera spot. And schedules don't allign to go east right now. We did good last season with roughly 15 yotes dropped. And will get back at it hopefully soon. Good luck fellas. Want to see more falling from everyone.

I got home from physical therapy to find 2 huge coyotes in the pasture about 450 yards out. They were gone by the time I got my gun and call. Just a couple of cottontail squeals and 4 young ones came in at a dead run. I got them within 80 yards, tried to stop them but the other 2 big ones chased them off and I never could get any of them to stop and with a crap ton of cattle in that field I wasn’t going to take any pot shots. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get on the board.

Swing and a miss.

After spotting a coyote on the backside of a swamp and only carrying my pistol. I setup in the timber. Downstream in the outlet of the swamp. Tried lip squeeking it for 20 minutes. No response. So circled around to see the coyote hunting in the backside for mice and such. After he put on a show attacking the ground he bedded down. So lip squeaked again from 200 yards. He instantly came charging in. But I had a flock of mallards about 40 yards in front of me. On a full run the ducks caught his attention and he made a full on jump after a drake mallard. Missed by inches and landed directly into the swamp. Came out defeated. And sat down. I started lip squeaking again and he came out of the brush at 35 yards. Then turned and crossed the swamp again. I saw him headed back toward my first stand so I took off. Set up with a shooting lane along the creek for about 20 yards. Sure enough in less than a minute he shows up trotting down the trail. I stopped him at 15 to 20 yards with the pistol poking out of the ferns. Boom. Swing and a miss. But it gets better. That little sucker ran right at me. I emptied 2 more shots with him running full speed at me missing both shots as the gun didn't feed another round. Pulled the trigger at 5 steps to a click.  As he ran right by and into the woods. Crazy fun experience but wow my shooting was poor. And even though that coyote was running straight for me that bugger was fast and hard to keep up with the aim on it. If only I had a shotgun or rifle he was handed too me. Fun experience and did my best to put one down but he lives for another day.

Another target aquired on camera 3 out of the last 6 nights. If he becomes less nocternal I may target him.

Haha. That's funny. Thanks for sharing.  That reminds me of a "swing and a miss" that I had once.

I was splitting firewood at a friends house next to his wood shed and a coyote popped out of the bushes at the edge of the yard about 20 yards from me. I casually got up from the log splitter (but left it running for background noise/distraction) and walked away from him to my car where I had a taurus millenium pro 9mm.  My friend was in the yard and I asked if I could shoot it and he said sure.  My car was about 100 yds from the coyote. The coyote was still at the edge of the yard just watching us.  I walked a large arc around the upper end of the yard until the woodshed was between me and the coyote. Then I sprinted to the woodshed and snuck around to the edge of it.  I poked around the corner with the pistol aimed and ready. The coyote was standing broadside at about 20 yards. He looked at me as I poked around the edge and I squeezed off a shot. BANG! Coyote spun a 180 and disappeared in the bushes. No sign of being hit. I'm pretty sure it was a clean miss. It was a fun attempt though.

It was a Ruger 9mm. Not my typical carry when in bear country as I usually would have a 357 revolver. I can say it has never malfunctioned like that before out of thousands of rounds. This was a new ammo that I hadn't even made it to the range to test as stores haven't had my original option in stock. So a lot of my faults for carrying that ammo. But even so it gave me an uneasy feeling having that happen for the first time. But another thing I think I may have done was limp wristed the shot trying to catch up to it coming at me.

But all that aside it was a fun little side adventure.

Caught this mangy male drinking out of my birdbath about an hour ago.  55 gr HP out of my T/C 223.  They were really cutting it up this morning right before dawn

We live across the street from a large chicken farm and they run all over the place out here...first one I've seen like this
