What, I was supposed to put a category, "I poached one the WDFW didn't know about".   :)

Bagged my 4x4 opening day of rifle season in Lewis River unit.  My ex-friends refer to me as "Lucky *censored*", because I have shot 4x4 or better 5 of last 7 years.  All westside rifle.  3 of 5 on opening day.  They on the other hand got to hunt private land this year...again, and again out of 9 of them, they only got one cow this year.  Friendship apparently went bad, after I told them it looks like they are the lucky *censored* anytime they manage to get one.  Last year between the 9 of them, they got nothing.  The year before one 3x4.  Yep, guess I'm a Lucky *censored*.  That being the case, I guess I'll take being lucky every year.

I've read somewhere that the national average for a rifle elk hunter is one animal in 8 years.  I have been told by F&G that it is @ 1 in 11 years for this state.  If you look at the harvest reports for last year, very few units have success rates over 10%.  Many were down in the 2-4% range, with most being between 6-8%.  I don't know, but to me, I don't consider any of those numbers to be a "success".

Stats do show that the permit hunts do have a much higher success rate, in most cases.
