Salvage Bobcat?
« on: January 07, 2023, 03:57:57 PM »
Someone hit a nice bobcat right in front of my house.
It just got the head barely.
Can you salvage bobcat for hide and is it worth it?

Nope. Not in Washington. They assume we are all poachers out there trying to run everything  down with our trucks if we want to salvage anything but a deer or elk. Makes no sense why the rest have to lay and rot

Don't promote illegal activities on the site, I know it sounds trivial, but we have rules to follow.

It’s ridiculous what they won’t let you salvage! Yes, previous responses are correct, only deer and elk.
Being a firefighter my guys called me several years ago advising of a big bear hit overnight not far from my place. Went to the spot and found the dead bear in the ditch, barely visible. Called WDFW and they had a warden call me back in regard to salvaging the big bruin. Nope! Even offered to soft tan the hide and euro the skull at no cost to them and give it to WDFW for education purposes, just didn’t want to see the thing rot in the ditch….answer was still no, even offering to punch my in-season bear tag to it! I stated ‘so you’re going to let this 250lb bear rot on the side of the road? Isn’t that Want and Waste?’ Answer was still no….incredible!

Wouldn't be illegal if you had a legal right to possess such animal.  Nothing in the law saying you can't legal trap or kill a bobcat that was hit by a car in an area that is otherwise legal to trap or hunt said animal.  Bobcat is in season right now for both trapping and hunting with a small game license.  I'm sure if you called the game dept. and ask if you could legally possess that animal, assuming you had a small game license, they would have said yes.

This does not apply to an animal, other than deer or elk, that you otherwise would not carry a tag or license for.  Example being.....a sheep, goat, moose, etc.

I would have called the game dept. explained the situation and the fact I have the license to legally possess such animal....and would bet money they let me keep it.

It would be illegal.

https://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=220-400-040

(1) Except as authorized by permit of the director or as otherwise provided by this section, it is unlawful to possess wildlife found dead.

"permit of the director" can be given by the WDFW.  Same way they use to let people salvage game before the law changed.  Discretion of the officer.....that's why you call.

Your also assuming it's dead.  Lots of animals get hit and lay on the side of the road for many hours before perishing.  It's not illegal to legally kill an animal that was previous wounded by a vehicle.
