FS Limits Access in 346 Unit
« on: January 12, 2023, 02:43:39 PM »
Elk season along with deer season sucked!  The forest service ripped a large portion of the roads out in the name of reducing fire dangers in unit 346.  Total BS!  A few years ago, there was a lightning caused fire near where we hunt/camp; the area had been thinned in the 1950-1960s and the fire was not very hot and burned brush and some of the smaller trees in the area.

The study that the FS posted on their web site also cited the cost of road maintenance as a factor in ripping out the roads.  I have been hunting the same area since the mid 80s and have never seen the FS doing any work on the roads, ever!  The campers/sportsmen keep the roads cleared of down falls during the summer/fall.  By ripping out the coverts and roads, and cutting trees down to block the roads, sportsmen cannot even walk the roads to get to their hunting areas.

Sad state of affairs that will negatively impact sportsmen who camp and hunt in the area, thus less tag sales and fewer hunters spending money in the local communities and supporting wildlife enhancement.  During both seasons, I only observed a few does and cows as well as a bunch of pissed off old timers who had previously hunted the area for the last 40 plus years.

They also bulldozed a ton of small trees and put them in the river.  One of the local business owners said the FS was trying to enhance the fish stocks.  I think someone at the district has lost their mind and is trying to limit public access and use of the National Forest land in the Little Natchez.  I can see more efforts to rip out the few roads in the area in the future to continue this process.  Guess it is time to start looking for a new hunting area out of state.

The 1921 road had huge berms put in throughout and also gates at each end close to where it intersects back on to the 1902 road.  We were suprised by this 3 years ago as we were headed downhill pulling trailers when we happened upon the foirst few large berms.  My son did some serious damage to his trailer frame as we were forced to go over the berms as there was no option to back them all the way back up the hill, and no where to turn around.

I inquired with the FS and they siad that it was supposed to be new culverts installed under the road.  But there was a mixup with the contractor and they installed berms as well.  I called BS as it was pretty dang clear they were trying to keep people out of the area.  I'm still pissed about it as we've been camping on the 1921 for over 25 years.

They also did some selective clearcutting from Crow Creek all the way up about 8 miles past Sand Creek.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

Instead of being reactive to change, hunters need to be proactive and share their input as a stakeholder in these proposed projects. The groups who did faired well. The forest service did a lot of outreach around 5 years ago (including during rifle elk season) before these projects were really in the works and not many hunting camps put their 2 cents in. All it takes is clicks of a keyboard and a phone call or two to see what projects are taking place in whatever area you’re interested in as NEPA takes years to complete for areas. A lot of those shelterwood units cut on the 1902 were being planned out 10+ years ago.

I will admit I hadn't looked in to many of the FS projects in the 346 in the past.  But I don now.  Just because of this.

I'll also admit that some of the areas that were cleared had been marked as a timber sale boundary for at least the last 15 years.  There was a lot of overly thick timber i was glad to see taken out of there.

We are more up to snuff on what the road conditions and what the FS is up to nowadays than we ever have been.
