We’ve butchered over 50 animals and have never seen this…
« on: January 12, 2023, 08:10:20 AM »
This was found in Idaho whitetail buck meat while we were butchering it. It was surrounded by meat, and was right next to the tenderloin. Fish and game said the buck was negative for CWD. Any ideas as to what this is? It looked like an avocado pit.

Could be a broadhead or a bullet? I killed the bull in my Avatar and it had 10 inches of a busted arrow in him and the broadhead was covered in a cartilage shell similar to what you are holding in your hand.

As the others have said, I'd put on some gloves and cut it up.  My bull from a few years ago had a third of it's backstrap present as chocolate pudding.  After a little digging I found a broadhead.  Pretty sure he also was hit by a car at one point.

That was my first thought.

There are no reports of transmission from harvested deer to hunters, and properly handled and thoroughly cooked game meat is safe to eat.

My Idaho deer had similar this year. It was an infection in its right ear down through the gland in the neck. Tested negative for cwd also.
I see infections like that quite often on beavers that have bite marks.
I think it just a nasty old infection.
