He is very close to the cage and he keeps coming back.  Odds are very long that he would go in. I believe coyotes don't like the enclosed space AND they pick up on the electro-magnetic field the metal cage mesh and frame put off.

I have a theory I am going to try when I get some shop time.I see them in and out of steel culverts all the time. I bought a chunk of culvert to turn into a live trap to see if I can get some yotes in it.

Great idea! I recommend making it a double door trap with the trigger a pin pulled when the bait, hanging in the middle, is pulled.

I could see this working. I saw a coyote off the road one time in a field I could hunt. Drove a little bit to some cover, jumped out to out the sneak on and no coyote. Snuck closer and he was on the other side of the road making good time away from me. Went and checked his tracks and he used a culvert to shoot under the highway.

Alternative idea: Build a trap that slides in a culvert, no sides just back and door. Set it right in dry culverts. I have considered this. Most culverts around here are 30" so I thought about building this to slip in that size. Haven't gotten around to it.

We have seen this so many times. They will even sleep in them at times. We have a pond that we built and has a culvert so the water flows out when it gets too high before washing over the pond edge and eroding it. From the right angle a guy can see into it from sways out. I always stop and look. I have killed more than a few yotes laying up in it. It’s partially buried and and stays cool and shaded in the summer they love to lay in it.

In culverts on rds around here they know it’s quicker to dive into a culvert instead of jumping the fences. Since some have hog wire on them and they can’t just run through them.

I think you are on to something.  How many of the coyotes you have caged had mange or other health issues that might have made them extra desperate?

Only two had health issues the very first one was missing a foot. And one last year had a mangy tail. The rest were healthy. I bait  with a beaver  leg and if they are dried out from hanging in the cage for a few weeks that seems to be when I catch the Coyotes. Coyotes frequently enter cages and trip the doors but the door it’s them on the back because the Trap is too short and they just back out before the door closes. Longer traps could be more successful. But I have caught them in small 16 x 16 42 inch long have a heart and little giant traps

I want to try this for ADC work!  I have a few larger cage traps.  Tell me more about how you set for them and what bait/lure you would use in the summer (when "old stinky beaver bait" gets completely eaten by maggots in just a couple of days.  How deep in earth do you cover the cage bottom?  Do you brush the trap in heavily? etc.

Actually the first one I got this year was a terrible set up with hardly any cover over trap. Just some long grass. Any bait like duck or chicken carcasses will work. I have just been lucky. I know coyotes enter many cage traps  but are able to back out because the door hits their back. Longer traps are best
