Anyone Selling Chicks?
« on: January 28, 2023, 05:16:06 PM »
I figured I'd ask here. Looking for chicks or chickens for this spring. The wife would like white or cream egg layers. I'm thinking we'd like 6-8 birds of a mixed variety.

I might have a source locally for you. I am checking now.  I will let you know when I get an answer. I will be in touch as soon as I can.
Maturity is when you have the power to destroy someone who did you wrong but instead you breathe, walk away, and let life take care of them.

Golden Sexlinks is the breed that we've had the best luck with. High egg production, large size eggs, very friendly towards kids and an overall sweet bird.

Just ordered 25 from WELP hatchery.  We’ve hatched our own for years.  We found it easier and cheaper to order them online.  The best we have found is the commercial layers.  Small bird that lays like crazy with little feed.

Our friends put this together if you’re looking for local birds. She got tired of chicks arriving dead in the mail. (Warning…she’s a little dramatic over the dead ducklings)

I have a commercial incubator in brand new condition I should put up for sale.   I'm out of the hatching business.   It will be interesting to see what the local co ops look like this year with babies.   My timing was perfect for rotating out old birds and fresh.   I've been averaging 12 gold butt nuggets a day this winter out of 15 birds.   Faithfully Keeping all my families cholesterol up.

The breeder we use said it's 2020 all over again and had to buy hatching eggs from us.

Unless it's completely obvious to you what breed your looking at don't buy a damn thing from North 40. I payed $15 a chick last spring for some English Orpington's that we're supposed to be a mix of rarer colors like Jubilee and some laced varieties. Ended up with a bunch of Marans of various varieties and only black and chocolate Orpingtons. Luckily they were hens. But the rest of the batch was wrong. Probably 15 out of 25 birds were the wrong breed. I noticed several other varieties mislabeled and clearly showing colors and characteristics of different breeds and when I pointed it out to the employees they were like "oh well that's what they came marked as so we aren't fixing it." You get what you get.... That really rubbed me wrong.

I'm running lavender Orpingtons at the moment.   Strayed a bit from the normal eggline for me, but I like the Buffs, so thought I'd try something different.   Pretty ladies, a bit crazy at first, but they settled down and are solid layers

Yeah Orpingtons are neat birds. We have lavenders as well. I have an old hen running free range out by the barn somewhere that doesn't lay anymore but she has spurs over an inch long. Don't know where that came from! I am willing to give the Marans to anyone who wants them FYI. PM me.

I will definitely have some in a few weeks. They will be barnyard mix and straight run though, great laying breeds but can't guarantee what will come out. I don't charge much for them because of this.

If not goto Jenks, who I have used for awhile and can highly recommend. If you don't want to go to Jenks directly Wilco somehow sells the chicks at the same price as Jenks and doesn't have minimum orders.

Doesn’t seem to be any shortages in all the “feed” stores.

We have some coming. My wife's hairdresser said she'd hatch some plus we ordered some other with her that we are going to split. We will have Leghorn, Blue Australorp, Gold  Laced Wyandotte, Hamburg, Blue Andalusians and maybe one other. I'll definitely have more than I need by about 10 or 12. Plan on moving extras down the road but wanted to make sure we had 8-10 hens for sure of a good mix.
