Ochoco GMU Oregon
« on: May 27, 2009, 04:28:03 PM »
I was wondering if any one has hunted this unit before(Ochoco)?  :dunno: I have 10 points as well as my partner. I am hoping to draw a riffle tag there this year. I have done some research and the numbers seem good. It seems like there is plenty of public land and some wilderness area's. I am just looking for some input.

 Thanks

great unit, good number of bulls. Lots of public land, I would be doing some backcountry style hunting there and your odds will increase. of course the weather could increase also during the rifle season

Have hunted it quite a bit for rifle deer. The bulls still will bugle then. Have seen some decent bulls. Killer rubs too. Seemed to find most of them on the dense, north facing slopes. From talking to the game department and local hunters and from what we have seen, hunt the northern band of the unit. We always camped on the north side of the Black Canyon Wilderness. Also saw lots of sign in the Cottonwood Creek canyon on the north side of the wilderness. Hunt north from there towards the private land. Lots of openings and ridges. The elk are there.
Can't we all just get along?

I'm pretty sure the ochocos can be draw with less than five points.  I would look at some other units.  More east and north of there.

Well I went down to Prineville this weekend. I was pretty impressed, Not only that my wife said she go camping on our aniversery, But that I saw a beutiful place. elksnout I took your advise and looked north. Bingo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I seen many, many, many deer...WOW. I only saw 3 bulls. 2 of which were dandies. I could not believe that I saw so many antelopes. 2 of them were hanging out with a coyote?????????????????? I'll post a picture. Not to mention the wild horses.

Thanks again for giving me some direction.

Hunter Y congrats on drawing the tag. Please don't show that picture to much of the coyote and the antelope. Next thing you know there will be a new disney movie out!!!  :chuckle: :chuckle:
