Here's an interesting video on wolf population estimates. We know one of the IDFG guys that has been monitoring cameras and another employee was telling me about the study, it's really pretty interesting, this is the first time I've seen anything online about it:

I’d imagine the actual wolf numbers vs reported, are somewhere in the same percentage as the actual illegals in this country! :twocents:

This is great NEWS. We can already see some positive results, the number of wolf tracks we see through the year in Idaho has dropped in some areas we hunt. If IDFG can continue to reduce wolf numbers to 500ish, we should see elk numbers rebound in some of the areas that have been drastically impacted.

I hate to see Director Schriever retire, he has been good for Idaho!
I hope the next director is effective.

Why would Idaho under report their wolf numbers?  :dunno:

There are lots of wolf trappers in Idaho and a waiting list of more people trying to get in the required trapping class.

Most trappers are not actually catching many wolves. It's the same old 90% are getting 10% of the game and 10% are getting 90% of the game situation. My son runs into a trapper that carries a photo album in his truck with a numbered photo of each wolf he has caught. Last time he talked to the guy he had just caught #51. There are two other trappers he knows who have caught quite a few, but a lot of newer trappers are still trying to get their first wolf.

We have experimented a fair amount with ways to offer a wolf hunt, but we have not come up with a consistent method to have a fair chance of taking a wolf in a 5 to 7 day hunt so we are not offering stand alone wolf hunts, so far we only have wolf as a free add on to other hunts in case someone sees one.
