Is three screws gonna hold up
« on: February 07, 2023, 10:32:07 AM »
Just like title says....
Sons birthday is March.
Stevens/savage model 320 .
Only one place makes a rail ,EGW I believe.
It's a Winchester 1300 clone.
So I ordered a rail on Amazon for a Winchester 1300 ,thinking that the holes would line up.
YA RIGHT.
So the rail I bought was 20,the egw rail is 40 bucks.
Instead of sending it back and all this.
Said I'll just drill a few holes myself.

Is three screws gonna hold or what.
Red arrows are the ones I drilled, and one hole on the back of rail.
Just need it to hold this red dot I bought him as birthday present.

I would think it would hold just fine.  I would go with it.  If it proves not to hold, I would change at that point.  Have him pattern the gun while sighting in the red dot and see how it holds up.  Again.....I think it will be just fine.

I would of drilled a fourth hole ,it ends up right at the end of the rail, craziest hole pattern I've ever seen.
I can always bring a few allen keys in my bag.
If it poops out ,and he still has the bead.

I would go with it. A lot of high power rifles having one piece bases only use 3 screws. Just Loctite them so they don't loosen up. If they loosen and you keep shooting they can strip the holes out.

Should be fine if the screws are grade 5 or 8 and the correct length. Scope mounting screws are normally grade 5. And don't forget to use Loctite, stay away from the Hobo Freight loctite.

I think T/C Contender barrels generally use just 3 screws and do just fine, and some of them are pretty stout on recoil.

I purchased a Brownell's screw kit quite a while back for a project, and it has been really handy for any mounting as the screw selection allows me to get max thread grip for rails and other small parts I need to mount. It includes the taps.
Great kit for a variety of projects.

You have more rail than you need and the unsecured end can vibrate and put unnecessary stress on the screws.  I’d cut the rail per the attached.  That will decrease the unsupported mass and you lose nothing by doing so.
