30-30 Bear Down
« on: May 27, 2009, 09:14:15 PM »
My friend Eric and I went out this past weekend to fill his Sherman tag. His weapon of choice was a 30-30 passed down to him from his Great Grandfather. Eric was looking for a boar 6 ft or better.

We passed on 2 bears Saturday, getting to within 30 yards of both of them. One was jet black, the other a pretty blonde/chocolate bear.

Sunday morning we saw 2 bears and passed on both, getting to within 10 yards of one and 60 yards of the other.

Sunday evening we watched a nice looking bear come out of the timber and start to feed on an open hillside. After judging him for about an hour we decided he was a shooter. We snuck in to within 70 yards, making sure Eric could get a good hit on the bear with his open sighted 30-30. One shot was all it took. It was one of the cleanest kills I've ever seen. Walking up to the bear, we realized he was a little bigger than we thought. It was a boar and squared and even 6'2".

Here are some pictures of the bears we pased on.

This is the bear he shot.

And after the shot.

Here's a link to a video of the hunt.

Awesome work. 10 yards is pretty close for a bearski. Looks like a nice boar! Cool to take it with open sights/30-30. I have one of them too, I use it as a brush gun if I need to. Grats to ya both.

Great footage, super nice bear.  A couple of those bears you passed on were very respectable bears.  Congrats to both of you and thanks for posting the photos and the video!!!!

Excellent!  First, I must congratulate you guys on passing on the other bears.  Second, your style of hunt'in is only one type popular but its my favorite!  Up close & personal w/a levergun (I'm not opinionated am I?).  Actually, I respect those who can judge & hit a target at long range.  Looks like the gun was a Winnie, right?.  Hope to get my Marlin 35 Rem out of the shop by 1 Aug!!!!!!!!!
