Savage 220 Rifled Shotgun ammo question
« on: February 18, 2023, 01:14:44 PM »
I just bought a savage 220 rifled shotgun for weapon restriction deer hunting, from what i understand the Remington Sabot slugs shoot the best and are recommended for these guns, my question is, can these guns shoot non-sabot slugs? This is probably kind of a dumb question but I cant get a clear answer whether this will be safe for the gun or no.

I'd just like to have rounds that I can throw down range to get a feel of the gun, becuase i know the Sabots are difficult to get and don't go cheap.

You can shoot any 20 guage slug you want out of them.  They just shine with sabots.  My uncles like the Accu-tips, my cousin's really likes the Hornady SST's.  The foster type slugs still shoot well but will be less accurate at range compared to the sabots.  If you are keeping it under 75 yards not much to worry about.  But past that the sabot's pull away. They have a different B.C. and buck wind differently.

I have that same gun. Its very accurate. The Remington Accu tips work best in my gun but the SST shoots pretty good too!

Purchased mine 6 months ago I think.  Got a scope all mounted up and now...........  waiting to find either one of the rounds mentioned (Accutips or SSTs) that aren't selling for $5 a round!  Insanity.  Really wish I hadn't sold off my 20 gauge reloading equipment 30 years ago.

I don't want to start a frenzy but any suggestions on finding rounds?  I have "notify me when available" set up on three different websites and search ammoseek weekly.  Slim pickins out there

I just got mine today at Ranch & Home, scope and all. Gentleman was nice to get me set up.

Federal Power-shoks seem to be the "cheapest" sabot i could find out there, not the trophy copper ones. Not as fast as the AccuTip's or SSTs but they usually seem like they go between 11-15 bucks a box, when available...

Remington Accutip slugs are very accurate and deadly. I have the same gun and my wife and I bagged three blacktail last year. I put three rounds in a 2”circle while sighting in before the season.
