Wife ok"d a can
« on: February 28, 2023, 09:32:11 AM »
I did a search before posting but hadn't seen any threads in recent years.

My wife gave the thumbs up to get a suppressor for the AR. Looking for experiences and thoughts on which one (if it makes a difference) and if I should do it local or online.

I'd recommend checking out Pewscience. It's the most comprehensive testing data out there I believe.

https://pewscience.com/rankings

Are you thinking a 5.56 dedicated can or a more versatile .30 cal can that you can also use on the AR?

Was initially thinking dedicated.......but now I'm not so sure.

Using the composite suppression rating, here are some comparisons.

.30 Cal Cans
 - Q Trash Panda: 28.7db suppression with 5.56 ammo, 33.1db suppression with .308 ammo
 - CGS Helios (Solid): 27.1db suppression with 5.56 ammo, 44.5db suppression with .308 ammo
 - Surefire SOCOM762 (Flash): 24.9db suppression with 5.56 ammo, 38.4db suppression with .308 ammo

5.56 Specific Cans
 - Surefire SOCOM556 (Flash): 35.7db suppression
 - HUXWRX HX-QD 556: 31db suppression
 - SilencerCo Saker 556: 32.6db suppression

So, the .30 cal cans clearly do not suppress 5.56 rounds as much as a dedicated 5.56 can would. But a .30 cal can is obviously more versatile since it can be used on anything from .300 WSM down to 5.56/.223 typically.

I apologize if this made the decision even tougher. Easy solution though, buy two! Or three, gotta have a rimfire can too! :chuckle:

Been waiting on a suppressor since June. Dreadi was great to deal with. The wait period has been long but worry free. Can't wait for the go ahead from the feds!

I have more suppressors than my wife knows about. When i first bought mine i really scrutinized the db reductions. After a few waiting periods i focused more on weight, overall length, and looks. The 1-2 db spread will not matter much unless you plan on shooting indoors without earpro. Also note that many have specialized mb that would be required for each host. Can get spendy if you have various platforms. I would recommend the 30 cal can.

I ended up with a 30 cal can and use it with .223 to 300wsm.  According to everything I've researched, it appears the dedicated .223 can's only reduce the decibel rating 2-3 ish decibels more than a 30 can can that is much more versatile.

I am going to get a dedicated .22 can for my rimfire rifles.

db SPL is a logarithmic scale. 3db less sound = 50% reduction
Achieving a 3db reduction in SPL is BIGLY YUGE.

Something no else has mentioned is that caliber specific suppressors has to be thought of in grander view of what platform you're putting it on. I'm not going to reccomend a Surefire RC2 5.56 for a guy that just wants to suppress is bolt action .224 coyote gun.

2-3db difference seems a bit low. From the numbers I pulled above it's an average 6db swing between .30 cal and 5.56 cans. The Surefire SOCOM's and the DA Nomad 30 are both 10db of suppression difference :dunno:

A couple of the .30 cal cans (red) outperform the worst 5.56 cans (green) though, so that's interesting.

There are a few factors for 30 cal cans on 5.56. Usually 30 cal cans are larger than 5.56 cans so the greater volume gives it better sound suppression on a 5.56 but the larger hole allows more sound out. I found to my untrained ear my 30 cal can sounds about the same on my 5.56 as my dedicated 5.56 can.

The other thing to consider is dB is not everything. You can shoot 2 suppressors side by side and the one with less dB reduction can sound quieter because of the tone.
