Need tire advice from those tire guys!
« on: March 10, 2023, 12:17:32 PM »
I just sold my 2005 Tundra crew cab and picked up a 2016 Tundra TRD PRO double cab.
Very clean low miles truck!
From what I have read on line this truck came from the factory with a 1.5” lift due to the Bilstein shock system and suspension.
Question:
What tire size can I safely move up to without getting any rubbing or having to use spacers? It has the original 18” black TRD PRO wheels.
Stock is a 275/65/18 or a 32.5” tire.
The guy I bought it from has 275/70/18 BFG’s on it that need to be replaced, they are a 33” tire.
I would like to go to a 34” 285/70/18 tire if possible.

Feedback is appreciated.

@Special T

I have no idea but some places like tire rack and other online sellers have fitment guides.  :twocents:

Thanks for the heads up.
I have tried those figment guides and it’s all speculation. Many do not consider the TRD package when giving sizes. I have checked forums and have received viewpoints from hey go to 35’s they only rub a little to no do not go past 33’s.
I was hoping to save some time and not have to drive to Discount for an opinion.
Thanks!

I have a 2017 Tundra crew max with Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks on the front to "level it" I run 275/70/r18 Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx tires and when they're brand new I get a very very light rub when reversing and turning.

The 285/70/18 will rub on  slightly on flex and on turn when new not only is it taller but about 1/2" or more wider.

BFG KM3 LT275/70R18 is 33.2 tall and 10.98 wide
BFG KM3 LT285/70R18 is 33.7 tall and 11.5 wide

I would browse the Tundra forums a bit. I would bet they have a tire size “sticky thread” because the question probably comes up so often.
I know the Nissan Frontier forum does.
And because it does, I just put a new set of BFG AT KO2, 285 70r 17s on today.
Stock size for my SV version is 265 70r 17s.
So far No rubbing.

Those tires look great on the Nissan.
That is a pretty
Large jump in tire size to not get any rubbing.
I will keep researching the forums and see what plays out. I do not want to lift the truck, just get as large a tire as possible for more clearance in off road situations.

Go to the tire store. Have them put the tires on the front & turn the steering wheel lock to lock. If they rub, go smaller. If they don’t rub, put them on the back & head home.

The Pro4X version actually comes with the 285 70r 17s. I have read some people have had to trim the plastic wheel well liner. I don't do serious 4x4'ing anymore, so no major flexing. I do need a good tire for where I hunt. The clay mud can get a bit messy.
