Out of state youth

Hey guys. I have been looking to get my son some more opportunities at game and looking at our neighboring states. Is it true I can get him and over the counter bear tag for general season for $26.50? He can also hunt rabbits with that tag. We do a lot of rafting in oregon and I’m looking to expand on that. In idaho I have to have a tag that matches the species he is hunting for? I’m confused about that. Thanks for any help or suggestions for other states to look at. We also have the possibility of hunting in Wisconsin but it’s far and expensive to get the meat back? Again thanks!

Don’t know how old your kiddo is. Lots of states have minimum age requirements for big game hunting. Think most are around 12

One of the only good things about Washington is any age that can pass the test gets to hunt.

May not help right away, but unlike WA some states allow youth points to transfer into adult. I know Wyoming does this.

Based on your post, I’m assuming you are looking at Idaho. Minimum age is 10, and correct, if your son has a junior mentored license, you’d need to also have a tag for the same species/area.

Thanks! Yeah I meant IDaho lol. My son is 12 this year which is why I’m looking at some out of state options. Can he hunt in IDaho if he has passed hunters Ed, which he has, without me needing to purchase a tag? Oregons regs seemed much easier to read but besides the basic hunting license being $10 seems like all other tags are the same price as adult NR hunters. I’m leaning towards oregon mostly because we like to raft down there and I’m trying to see if we can do a rafting/hunting trip.

only way he gets the kids pricing and not the full pricing is the mentored youth tags. At 12 he is good to go in all western states. Some are more friendly to NR youth than others. Start building him some points now while it's cheap if he is into hunting and don't see him slowing down anytime soon

MT has cheap kids tags but you also have to have a sponsor with a tag.  Doe OTC tags are under $100.

Check out WY antelope, used to be super cheap for kids, especially doe but I haven't looked for a few years.

I think idaho mentored youth tags can be any idaho adult tag holder to sponsor him for the mentored tag. They just have to hunt with them. If you had a friend who is an idaho resident you wouldn’t need to buy any tags if you didn’t want to. I did the mentored tag for my cousin one year, but it was a long time ago. He had his own kid now 😂
