Elk hide
« on: October 06, 2023, 04:32:38 PM »
I have an elk hide I was going to get tanned but drug my feet and forgot about it. It was folded up and put in a bag and froze 2 years ago. Is it any good? Still worth getting tanned? Or toss and and plan to do it with my next one.

Also does anyone have any recommendations on someone that would tan it?

I know its alot of work but I would tan it myself. Google it. It's not hard just time consuming.  Or look up Moro taxidermy out of lake stevens. He does great work.

I've done many coyotes, deer, bear hides. Do it yourself. Not sure about elk sitting in the freezer for 2 years but i had coyotes in the freezer for 2 years and they were fine. Hope you rolled the hide skin inside, hair outside before freezing it. Good luck

I tried to do an elk hide several decades ago with no success. Besides being big, they're also thick along the back and especially the neck. Since I was unable to shave down the thickness of the skin, like commercial tanneries do, the tanning solution couldn't penetrate all the way through. I ended up with what amounted to a hairy sheet of plywood. I personally would rather pay someone to do it right. Freezer burn will ruin a hide but if it was wrapped in plastic, it should be good to go. Good luck.

My taxidermists says wrap the hide in a blanket to help keep freeze burn away.
