Switching from .50cal to .45 cal - Opinions?
« on: March 29, 2023, 09:15:15 AM »
I switched from .50 cal to .45 cal due to a faster barrel twist (1:20), and bullet stabilization and I bought a Traditions Pursuit XT.
Is anyone hunting with .45 cal that can share their opinion here? Also looking for some feedback on the best bullet options.
I'm planning to use 209 primers with Hogdon Triple seven pellets/powder and Powerbelt Aerotip 225gr or Powerbelt ELR 285gr

Moving to a fast twist 45 is, in my opinion, a really good move!  You will get faster FPS and flatter trajectory most of the time.  Unless you are stuck in Idaho no reason to use a Powerbelt there are so many other options.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I personally wouldn't do it, bullet options seem very limited

Given our sight limitations in WA I can't convince myself moving to a flatter shooting option is worth going away from the .50

In states where you could use modern scopes is a different story.

But I would love to hear some counterpoints.
You will never shoot a camp bull by spending all your time hunting in the woods.
