Utah Oils
« on: April 26, 2023, 01:11:51 PM »
I have been applying for points in utah for years.  This year I think I am going to put in for some oil hunts.  I know there is almost a 0% of drawing so I don't have any expectations.  But i will never have a chance of drawing if I just keep building points.  But I don't even know what units I would apply for.  So does any suggestions?  I am thinking about bison, both sheep and maybe mountain goat.  Are these hunts pretty much all on public land or is a mix of public and private.  That seem to be my biggest question.  But any info would be appreciated.

All the sheep hunts are solid. All 7 non resident tags between both species  :chuckle:

Goats are about the same. How many points do you have for each?

Might wanna check what happened over the winter in units you're thinking about. Hearing a lot about winter kill in the north  but the central and some southern areas got hammered also and it wasn't just deer.  An area we hunted in the se part of the state is still unaccessible and normally this time of year guys are there chasing turkeys with no problem.  Probably not a problem, but would hate to draw an oil tag and find out the unit got devastated.

Thing is if you’ve been buying points only you’ve wasted money, they give so few tags that anybody who isn’t at or close to max right now just needs to apply and hope to get lucky in the random. Look at them as lottery tickets. No different than applying for sheep/goat/moose in Washington

:yeah: Zero gives you a .01% chance and max gives you a .08% chance so you better start Appling. You've already wasted a decade worth of chances. ALWAYS apply for hunts in a bonus point system :twocents:

Just randomly pick a unit, odds are you wont draw anyway.  Don't give it too much brain power.  If lightening strikes and you do end up drawing the Oh #$%$ factor will just go up knowing you don't have a clue what units you put in for.

:yeah: pretty much how I roll, I figure drawing a tag is way harder than finding a sheep or goat in a crappy unit anyways  :chuckle: just send it
