Last year to this year
« on: May 13, 2023, 05:16:41 PM »
Went to the same spot I was at last year during the same week.  What a difference a year makes.  Last year I had birds off the roost early and gobbling non stop most of the morning.  This year not a peep and only a a few poops on  ground. Buddy and me were out 2 weeks ago in a different area but pretty close by and were hammered early morning and silence by 7:30 but dust was a show.  This was around Colville.  Anyone have this experience this year? Have next weekend off.  Might make a last run and call softly and keep moving until I find good sign.

Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of useful tips in regards to the timing in the season. My best thought is cover ground watching for birds and sign until turning something up. I have done a lot of fall turkey hunting in years past. That was always my strategy. Then when birds were located I would stick to those areas and travel routes. This season was a first for me in the spring. Went to the NE and night before the opener I had several birds gobbling and next day by 3 or so in afternoon had 2 separate gobblers down. During that time in my area the toms were searching with no hens around. And they were very vocal. I wish I had more time over there or more hunters in the group to work more areas and learn more. It was very successful and I was having everything line up. But would like to spend more time learning even more during slow times. Stick with it. If you do locate a bird be patient with it and give it plenty of time to come in. Sometimes they can sneak into a call quietly.

The mysteries of spring turkey. I’ve been hunting the NE corner 21 years in a row and they still keep me guessing.

From my experience this season most toms are gobbling hard from 9:30-11:30. That seems to be around the time the hens have separated from the toms to nest their eggs. Still working hard myself to fill a tag. I've had a few come in this year to 100 yards, and one last Sunday at 16 yards. Had him dead to rights, however he came in just behind me to my right. I had to work that bird for 2.5 hours before he came in. That was the most fired up gobbler I've had all season long. Been a different year for sure this season. I myself am enjoying the challenge. When it happens this Spring, it will feel that much more rewarding and earned. Stick with it and best of luck. 🦃

this really sums up generally (for me). the late unstable spring weather patterns have the birds hot then cold then hot again.. late snow melts, late breakup of groups ect.. these birds move / migrate from wintering to nesting valleys to hills leaving the farm predator's behind, means little that you hear nothing or see nothing today, tomorrow could be entirely opposite same area. week to week during the season, status will change as they have "areas"  to be in year to year. Generally , it feels like they are a month behind this year with normal patterns but still very manageable most everywhere.

Interesting,  we left private after a successful morning hunt and went to our public spot.  Last yr there was the most sign we have ever seen.  Incredible amount of poop, scratches, feather.  This year absolutely nothing.  I am pretty confident this spot does not get hunted.
