Repositioning of ears
« on: June 02, 2009, 10:22:45 AM »
Has anyone ever re-saturated the ears of a taxidermy mount to reposition the ears?
Is there a possibility of hair loss?  :dunno:

It really depends a lot on how the animal was tanned, there is always a chance to slippage. Also if done right there should be clay in there for the earbutts that has now hardened so to my knowledge once dry it is almost impossible to wet it up and move it.

Hope this helped you.

I've had some I'd like to do it too, but as stated, that clay is essentially concrete.

I have attempted to rehydrate a few things of mine but the cape has so much memmory that it is nearly impossible to reposition. Now that was with the alum self tanned stuff. If it is a good tannery cap you may get away with rehydrating and busting out the clay. Might ruin the mount too  :dunno:

Follow-up
Thanks for your posts.
I experimented on a piece of hide I had. Which worked on resuturating. I use Liqui-tan for tanning.

On the animal I driled a hole down through the ear liner base. Then poured water into it several times a day to resaturate the clay and inner hide. When I put the water in I would turn the head upside down to keep water in the ear area, then turn right side again.
Also at the same time I wrapped the base of the ear with white cotton and kept that saturated, this helped saturate the outer hide.

After two days I was able to turn the ears how I wanted and stablized them.

They dried where I wanted them and I am very pleased.   :)
