water bottle decoys?
« on: May 24, 2023, 10:56:48 AM »
Hello everyone,
I have been noticing for many years now people posting here and their about making decoys with milk jugs or water bottles.  I also used to know a guy from turkey and another guy from Seattle who would say " ducks are too dumb to spend alot of money on and the fancy decoys are just for the hunters and not the ducks". So what I'm asking is how many of you have made water bottle decoys, what was your success if any.  Also, how did you make them? What color and type of paint did you use?

Did you use any of these heads?

Thank you and have a great day.

You used to be able to buy a decoy that was made out of 2-liter bottle.  I used to have a dozen of them and eventually got rid of them.  I don't hunt over bottles, but have down South where they used them as fillers.  They had several hundred of them painted black and strung up with line attached to concrete weights.  They made the weights by filling dixie cups with cement and adding a horse shoe shaped single strand electrical wire that was stuck into the cement.  They seemed to work good as we shot lots of ducks over them.

I am a firm believer that duck decoys are sold to the hunter.  I do prefer good goose decoys in high traffic areas as they get smart on decoys.  Ducks get smart on blind or hide location along with no movement in the spread.  For ducks movement in the spread and excellent hide are key.

We tried making a bunch with 2 liter bottles and milk jugs painted flat black as 'fillers'. We were running a pretty big spread already and it was on private land. It worked. We were never really sure it added enough attraction to be worth the extra work so we didn't keep it up.

The black really stands out and the ducks pick them out from a distance.  I will throw in black duck decoys in the mix to help bring down the birds eventhough we don't have any black ducks in the area.

Worked primarily on large flocks of divers, especially in heavy weather.
