American Legion, VFW/Memorial Day
« on: May 03, 2023, 02:34:03 PM »
I just rejoined the American Legion Post 014 in Vancouver and was immediately voted in as an officer.  :chuckle: I think I'm going to be busy. Most of the members are older than I. Although it was just an election meeting, I only saw one woman who was younger than I, probably 30s.  Do you vets participate in these organizations? Do you go every week? Special occasions only? Volunteer at all and at what?

I use to go to the VFW in Bremerton back in the late 80s early 90s. Also use to shoot darts out of there.

I had my US Navy retirement ceremony at the Oak Harbor VFW post 7392 back in '06, and was a member in good standing for about 5 years after that.  But then life got in the way and I couldn't commit as much time anymore.  Maybe one day I'll get back over to them.

Gary
One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

Wednesday evenings are a dinner and raffle. With the exception of one young lady, I'm the young guy. A lot of the vets need some extra support running errands, picking up meds, etc. I hope to be able to help when I can. It's better that I work from home and they're all within 5-10 miles.

I have raffle tickets for a June 15th raffle. One prize - $1500 gift card (your choice) - 800 tickets max, $10 each. I'll mail you the stub and no need to attend to win. Let me know if you're down and I can call and arrange it. This is to support building improvements, new air conditioning unit.  Thanks guys.

I played legion baseball in Vt. They treated us really well. If your legion has a team, that may be a ready source of labor for you to utilize.

Even 30 years ago, the members that i saw were older. I think that is common. People tend to join these sorts of organizations later in life.

 :yeah:
I belong to a couple, and pay my dues to keep the doors open, but can never make it to the meetings.  Too much going on with teaching and coaching and family.  ROA for instance meets at lunchtime.  I'm a teacher with a 35 minute lunch.  No way I'll make it to a meeting for another 15 years....
