Shed hunting "the molt"
« on: June 02, 2009, 07:42:22 PM »
Love this time of year.  The boys are wrapping it up and I score on some more fly tying material.  Its a regular treasure hunt out there for the girls.  Every once in awhile I get there first.  All in one day.....

Oh boy, a couple hundred I guess.  About 150 chicks at the moment I think and then a bunch of adults.

I wish our weather on the wet side allowed for feathers like that. I have a reeves rooster that has a 4 foot plus tail each fall until the rains come. I think about it but do not have the heart to pull it out and the rain just breaks it off. Nice looking feathers Bone.

My Reeves'tail made it a little longer this year, but always manages to break off too.  I've thought about trying some different things with his pen as I'd love to get a picture of it at full length.  I was seconds from killing and stuffing my Blue peacock last night but the sun hit him just right.  Probably saved his life.

We have talked about making a covered round or cornerless pen for the birds with big tails to see if it really helps.  :dunno:Seems like the rain and them changing direction in the corner breaks off all good tails. Why would you kill and stuff the peacock? That would certainly take a bit of wall space :chuckle:.
