Boy got a 4 month youth cow tag
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

I have been curious how many people would apply for the units that were OTC until last year and what kind of odds they would have.

With only 22 points I really didn't expect to draw anything.

Probably just head down to Portland and riot instead.

I swear, how dumb is their website! I admit to never applying before but I log in, go to my portfolio and NO where is there a tab “see results” or “check results” !  It’s like a secret decoder ring is needed! No email, no nothing…..  I’m sure I didn’t draw but would be nice to confirm.

"Controlled Hunt Wins" under your Recreational Portfolio, that lists which controlled hunts that you applied for that you were awarded a tag......

My buddy has been hunting the area for a long time and has said I should come down and hunt with him for years but I finally decided to do it this year. I at least have the advantage of hunting the area with some with intimate knowledge of the area. He is still a few years away from his Walla Walla tag.

The odds are going to get worst as the years go on I think. Last year there was one NR that did not get selected. This year there was about 30 NR that didn't get selected.

The wife finally drew the Umatilla #3 refuge buck tag. Took 27 points to get it, should be a lot of fun sneaking around looking for a hog buck!

We drew our east side archery elk tags. Good thing because I just got back from 2 1/2 day trip from there hanging trail cams and cutting in some trails.

I'm one of the NR who didn't draw the east archery tag that I've had for 13 years. That sucks. However, drew rifle deer in Murderer's Creek, which I expected, given the points I had.

Congrats to Finnman's wife. Looking forward to that hunt--vicariously..

Hoping one of you experts in Oregon can answer a question.
I applied for a tag that I didn't have enough points for hoping to get it in the 25% pool. No Dice. When looking at the Controlled Hunt Draw Execution report that Oregon had posted, it appears that you enter the drawing with the point total you had from last year. So when applying this year, you don't get a point until after the draw. Does that seem right?

I had 5 points last year and now my account is showing 6 points. When scrolling thru the excel sheet, i found my app # and it only said i had 5 points for this year.....

I could do a little digging but figured one of you fellas would have this dialed in. Appreciate any answers!

Correct.  You enter the draw with your existing points, and if you don't draw you get awarded another point if unsuccessful.

That is correct, I believe all preference point states do it that way, and the bonus point states give you the bonus point prior, similar to Washington.

Roger that. Thank you fellas!

Looks like I'm 1 point further behind then i thought. Probably more with the point creep but it appears like maybe it leveled off this year due to the changes the last few years.

That makes no sense. If you don’t draw the points used were what you had going into the draw. If you do the points were what you had going into the draw plus this year’s point??

I agree with you, don't make sense. You should go in the following year with a point.
But i wonder if you draw, that takes your point away for the year.

Correct. You get a point for every year you don't draw, so those points aren't added until after the results are known, when you successfully draw you go back to zero.

Last year there were more tags than apps for the archery unit I applied for. This year there are a lot of NR's that didn't draw.  I'll guess that is largely a function of WA hunters fleeing WA.

However, my luck is not all bad: There were only 3 NR apps drawn after I drew my buck tag. In fact, a group of 4 NR's didn't draw just after me because there were not enough tags--the group of 4 was one too many. 3 other NR's drew after them. Also, in the spring bear hunt, I was the last NR to be selected in the 25% pool.

Getting tougher to draw OR as an NR!

Kind of sucked for us.  Wolves really cleaned house on the elk.  I made three trips down there from the opener to about the 22nd of the month and never heard a bugle.  One of my hunting buddies did here two different bulls bugle over a 4 days time.  Thinking late rut for where we were.  Talked to hunters that hunted a bit higher elevation and they had a little action but not too much.

It was a great one day hunt in Oregon!
Wife shot the buck she wanted not the biggest in the herd of 6 bucks, But she is happy and it was a great job putting it all together going from a half mile to 125 yards in the wide open.
Good hunting to all!!
