The problem is I’ve never been there before. Don’t know anything about the unit. I was hoping someone who has hunted there in the last few years would help me out on info

Sounds like it's time to go to the unit and do some scouting.  And use Google earth.

Plan on hunting the the tree farm. You can’t get into gates until 9 days after getting the keys. I would like to hunt the fields down low. Here there’s good elk there. Knocked on doors and have been bitten by dogs way more than getting permission !! So I’m a little worried about that !!

You can get in the Crown mainline now, just not in a truck or motorized. Use your legs on a bike and hiking to dial in where the elk are. Will help get ya tuned up for the hunt. The population distribution is relatively small and doesn't change much throughout the year. Scout the much overlooked Baker Lake Road drainages that come off the main block (west to east). This is a place you could start spending time in immediately and have a pretty solid picture of where to hunt in a few weeks.

What weapon is it for?

In general, you have elk down low on private property which you may or may not be able to get permission to hunt. You have elk, most of the biggest ones, on timber company land that you don't get a key to the gate till a few days before season. And you have some sparse populations here and there on forest service land. At least that is my 2 cents.

I don't know a ton. The elk in the fields are unlikely to be the big ones. At least, I have never seen a big bull out in the S. Fork valley.

I do live close though and I am always up to scout if I have time. Feel free to PM me is there are places that you'd like to see. I have a phone/ camera and have elk hunted some. I'd be happy to check an area out for you. I can bike in etc.
