Western WA Quality Bull Archery Mudflow Unit 5099
« on: June 22, 2023, 11:29:39 AM »
Hi All,
I just drew the archery bull mudflow tag for 2023. If anyone has any tips, suggestions, or stories about mudflow archery hunts I'd appreciate it. Or if you also drew the tag message me and we can compare notes! I've already done some scouting on the south side of the unit and found plenty of access on the DNR roads there. It also seems like they expanded the unit in the last couple of years east into the monument area, so I'm curious if any previous hunters think that newly expanded area is a good spot to hunt. Thanks!
FAQS
-took 16pts to draw
-already bought weyerhouser walk-in permit to hunt the property on the north side of mudflow unit
-have not yet received information about the unit from WDFW

I havnt looked this year but take a close look at all other hunts down there. Many years youth rifle bull overlapped archery cow and a few others that really seemed like they screwed the more traditional hunters. My nephew had the youth rifle bull tag a few years back and that was the case. Guy was going ape *censored* cause he thought only archery cow tags were open and there was kids down there mowing bulls down with rifles. Don’t know what you would really do differently but always good to know what to expect and who is and isn’t breaking the law BEFORE you call the game warden and look like a idiot yourself for calling in people hunting open tags. We Complained about the lack of communication on those overlapping seasons so hopefully they have called that out better now on this hunt than they used to

Awesome glad they got that taken care of. It should definitely make more of a quality hunt for you. Good luck!

Friend had the disabled cow tag a few years ago there were bulls everywhere but no cows.   Havent been there this year but I would start scouting as much as I can.   When his hunt was going we found them near both ends and close to the tree line.  Do you have the weyco permit?   If so you can hunt all the way down from the highway but if not I think you can only hunt the state portion.

Thanks for the info. When you say both ends do you mean the east and west (upstream and down streams) or the north and south (either side of the toutle river)? Yes, I bought a weyco walk in permit for that north side chunk inside the unit.

Also: has anyone camped there? can you camp inside the Mudflow unit as long as you're still on DNR and not the weyco or wdfw land?
Thanks,
Colton

Yes you got it right.   The east and west ends.   We saw the most activity on the east end by the weyco and unit boundaries.   Not sure if you cancamp on the state land but I think weyco changed the rules for some walk in permits to allow camping.  Read your permit agreement.

Quick Update,
I just received a mailer from WDFW with a vague map of the mudflow and some instructions on how to access the WDFW area via the weyerhauser land and how to get to the DNR land on the south side. It also included a couple of rules for hunting within the monument. That's about it. Nothing makes up for scouting when it comes to this tag. Also thanks to all the folks on this forum who have shared their knowledge of the mudflow.

Congrats on the tag. It should be a fun hunt. Feel free to send me a message, my husband works in that area quite a bit and I can send you some pins and any info of areas to target for scouting.

Will do. I have been scouting a few weekends already and seen cows but no bulls yet. I am planning on setting up camp this weekend and doing some more looking around.

One bull on trail cam in the Mudflow. Just placed a camera in a spot that looked like it would pass through. Got camp set up over the labor day weekend. Looking forward to the opener on Saturday!
