Trail Boss powder substitute
« on: October 25, 2024, 05:38:16 PM »
I used to use Trail Boss to crank out lower recoil loads using this guidance:  https://hodgdonpowderco.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/trail-boss-reduced-loads-2018-2.pdf

I promised to take a group of youth on a reloading/shooting trip and several of them have never shot rifles and/or are younger and smaller.  It seems Trailboss was discontinued or production paused and I haven't been able to find any for some time now.

Does anyone know of a similar powder I could look at that is more readily available?

I found this on the googler "AP 70 and Unique are very similar to trailboss". I've been finding Unique for low pressure shotshell loading in a few places. Three Forks Trading (Cle Ellum) Pinto's (Renton) Sportco (Fife).

I've used both Tin Star and Trail Boss for reduced loads.  You can't just fill the case as with Trail Boss but it is pretty similar otherwise.

I bought an 8lb jug of shooters world “buffalo rifle” powder a few years back when it was still cheap. Turns out that it’s the same or close enough to 5744, so it works in just about every rifle or pistol cartridge. Don’t know where you can get it around here though, I ordered it from powder valley.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
