Which broadhead???

Just recently bought a new bow. I've been shooting lots and have committed to 300grn Gold Tip arrows. At 29in draw and 60lb, what grain broadheads would you go with?? My field points are 100 grn, and it shoots lights out, but just a little worried about it being a little light for elk.  Just wondering if it would be wise to bump up to 125 for my broadheads to see how it does???  I know bow hunting boils down to personal preference, but just wondering everyone's personal ideas???

I prefer to use the same grain for my field points and broadheads. If you bump up to 125grn, practice with 125grn field points. If you’re dead on with 100grn, you’ll kill an elk if the shot is placed properly

I've shot the 125gr Slick Trick magnums for elk for quite a while.  The elk don't like them.    I practice with 125 gr field tips, no adjustments needed.

300grn arrows - do you 300 spine?

29 draw and 60 pound is right in the middle of the 100 VS 125 question.

If it's 300 spine, you're fine to go 125. Anything lighter spine, 100 grain.

I generally prefer a heavier arrow, if you can swing it, buy a pack of 125 grain field tips in the exact same manufacturer as your 100s.

If the 125 shoot just as well as the 100, go 125.  If they don't, then stick with 100.

I've been using the G5 Stryker V2 broadheads and they have performed awesome,  I highly recommend them. My setup is 65 # , 340 slimmer arrow, 125gr V2 with a total arrow weight of just over 550gr. I've been getting way better penetration than my previous lighter setup for the last three years. Those V2s fly like field points , hold together through bone, couldn't ask for anything better . What arrow model? What is your current bow speed? Sliding or fixed sights? Fixed or mechanical heads?

Assuming a standard .246 diameter ( hunter xt, pro etc...) and stock components, you are probably coming right around 420-425 grains total arrow. I could run the numbers but estimate likely 11 to 12%ish FOC. Plenty good with a standard hunting rig for any elk medicine.

  IF the 125 shoots as good or better than the 100, on paper it has the better data. 450ish weight and a good bump to that FOC percentage.   

  By the numbers you should be able to shoot either one, you will drop 5 to 7 FPS in arrow speed, and that will affect your pins slightly at extended ranges, if using a slider you will likely need a new tape.

Testing is the very best way. If at all possible buy both and shoot both to compare. That will give you the best results and confidence you made the "right" choice, especially if talking fixed blade heads.

Yes, I'm shooting the Hunter XTs with a 300 spine. I've killed elk with 100grn Slick Tricks so that's what I was going with, but just like getting opinions from others. I like the idea of getting the exact same field points in 125 and shooting them. Thanks for the ideas

Great info, me personally, I’d stick w what is working. I’ve killed some elk with my 100gr shuttle T’s, placement is the goal.

I would stick with the 100gr since that is what you have. If you wanted more weight forward you could always get insert weights. You could get some 125 field tips and try it to see what your drop and how well they shoot and that would be inexpensive.

I am currently in a similar boat as I would like to try some 125 just to see how it shoots but I am probably fine with what I have.

I currently am set up with 28" 250 spine X-Impacts with 100gr Slick Trick magnums and 80 gr outserts with a arrow weight of 470 gr. at 75# and 30" draw.
Only reason I was thinking about it was my speed is a little more than I was wanting (294 fps). was looking to be closer to 280 fps but that is just me.

I shot 125 ozzcuts fixed 2 blade last year with brass 50 grain inserts and blew through my deer. Total arrow weight around 515 grains. Thinking of going to 150 grain and dropping the brass insert or keeping it in to make my arrow 535 grains. Broadheads are very opinionated. One thing everyone can agree on is make sure your broadheads are super sharp (popping hairs). If they don’t cut hairs off your arm there not sharp enough.



Also I’m shooting 27” draw at 60lbs

  I have been using a weighted insert in my arrows for so long i cant remember when i didn't. Shot hundred grain heads for years, as that was always the most readily available usually with 75 to a hundred grains in insert.. With the recent surge in popularity of FOC, heavier broadheads have become more common. 125s are very common to see next to nearly all their 100 grain counterparts and even some heavier options in several manufacturers. Because of this I have started to drop the insert weight a bit and run the weight in the broadhead. More material in the head is a good thing and also gives more options to play with.
