One of the lucky ones- 108 Douglas Bull Moose
« on: June 25, 2023, 07:17:13 PM »
As the title says, I'm one of the lucky ones this year. Drew Douglas A Late Any Antlered Bull Moose. Still can't believe it and not sure I will until my tag is in hand. You can't buy it on the online licensing platform nor from a dealer and WDFW can't sell the OIL tags until a minimum of 15 days has passed since the draw. Had no idea that was how it worked until I called the morning after the draw. Been hunting Colville area since I was 9 years old. Mostly 121 and 117 and have spent a little bit of time in 108 chasing turkeys but not much so I'm looking forward to learning the unit more. So excited for the hunt of a lifetime! Still can't believe this is real.

Go to the NF office in colville and get all the cut data.  We see tons of sign but few moose.  Where we hunt doesnt give lots of vistas.  There are lots of 2 to 5 year old cuts and thats a great place to start.

Congrats! I had the early tag last year and it was a blast. I killed my bull opening morning. PM me if you want any info. I had some help from a few previous tag holders that helped a lot since I didn't know the area real well. After scouting all summer I got to know the unit pretty well.

Congrats on your tag.   Had the late tag in 2016 and accompanied my partner in 2018 with the early tag.
Pm sent.

Thanks all. Still can't believe it. I'm like everyone else, "it never happens to me, always happens to other people". All I can say is, you can't win if you don't play. I don't gamble or play the lottery or anything like that, so hunting draws have always been my casino. Hitting the jackpot felt pretty surreal. I'll keep everyone updated on my scouting trips and the hunt as things progress.

So if I'm understanding the regs/WAC correctly, I dont need to wear hunter orange if I'm hunting moose with a bow or muzzleloader but I do if I'm using a rifle? Regardless if mod fire deer or elk is open. So I can bowhunt the morning with no orange but if I switch to rifle in the afternoon or see a moose a couple hundred yards out and decide to use the rifle then I need to put my vest on? Who comes up with these rules

Think you have the better tag of the two.  May not be able to call them in during the rut, but moose stink like tomcats in the rut and the yellowjackets will help with the processing.  Late season may get a little slick with snow, but the majority of the leaves are off the trees and brush so it is a lot easier to see that 4x8 sheet of black plywood from quite a distance away.  Find vantage points where you can glass into 3-5 year old cuts.  Moose are big critters and they require lots of browse to sustain them.  You will definitely be able to tell when moose have been using an area just by watching the tips of the brush along the roads, chest high to a man and up will be all nipped off.  Bring lots of game bags, a come-along and preferably a couple tough young studs to help out, they always don't fall by the road and sometimes they fall into a hole left by a root wad!
