Beezley Youth Any Deer
«
on:

My 10 yr old son drew a youth any deer tag in the Beezley unit. This is a new unit for me but I'm excited to figure it out. I'm not asking for advice on where to hunt; although I would certainly welcome it.
What I'm asking is when should we hunt it? This tag gives us an extra weekend over general season, Oct 14 - 29. Due to an important work event, I cannot hunt Oct 21st but I can dedicate any other Friday through Sunday. Is it worth being there opening weekend with EVERYONE else or would our time be better spent after general season on that last weekend of October?
Thanks in advance, I'm really hoping that he'll get his first deer this year. He's a champ at hiking and nearly got it done last year but not quite.

Congrats to you and your son.
Interesting choice.... if you hunt it early, you'll see where the crowd is and get a little lay of the land. It might be nice to have that figure out a little before you go late.
Being able to hunt late like that could be a blast.
Enjoy.

What Dano said. Scout it out on the opener and know where you want to be the last few days when the bucks start looking for does.

Go out opening day and cuss at all the road hunters, trespasses and poachers….swear you will never step foot in that unit again and go home!!!!! Take a day or two to calm down and rethink your hasty decision and decide to go back after all the yayhooooos have gone home. Find some public land and start loooking for a buck. Lots of bucks out there but not a ton of mashers. Great unit for kids as they will see deer and should be successful. The unit is huge, but the deer are concentrated in certain areas. It is heavily patrolled by wdfw due to the amount of trespassing and poaching so stay on public land…..and regardless of what others may say….the conservation land is not public. The only way you get permission is to volunteer with them and help maintain their lands.

Great unit but can be an absolute zoo opening day can be great, but just lots of people. Lots of glassing is key, they will just stand there in the bitter brush blend in super well.

My son & daughter both had the tag once. Son tagged out on opening day, daughter on day two. Both killed bucks. My advise, just be out hunting. Lots of pressure, and deer will be bouncing around. My kids are aged out now. Wish they would have had that tag more than once each. You guys will have a fun time! Pack lots of drinking water. Must add, my daughter hunted for about 30 min of the afternoon on day two. We missed the opener due to another commitment. Drove home from Boise, grabbed the rifle and went out.

Shouldn’t have any problems getting him his first deer out there! Lots of deer in that unit!

For a quality hunt with the kid I'd be tempted to go after the general season was over, should be plenty of bucks still and you don't have to worry about the zoo, might as well make their experience the best one possible.

If your son is interested in shooting a doe, I'd knock on some landowners' doors this summer/early fall. They may not allow buck hunting, but some would be happy to let him kill an orchard-raiding doe. You may get lucky and find one willing to let him shoot a buck, too.

Thanks for all of the advice so far. We've been driving around the unit on the last two Sundays. We've managed to pick up three different "Hunt by written permission" properties so I'm feeling pretty good about things so far. It's awesome country!
