Anyone shooting the high BC heavies in a 25 caliber build?
« on: June 22, 2023, 12:13:25 AM »
Does anyone here have a fast twist 25 Caliber build that you're shooting any of these high BC 131-135 gr bullets in??

Can't say that I've ever been much of a 25 caliber fan in the past but with Berger's 133/135 and now Hornady's 134 ELD-M entering the 25cal world something like a 25-284, 25 PRC, or 25 SAUM interests me a whole lot more than it ever has.

When you run the numbers of a .257 134gr .640 BC or 135gr .650 BC launching at 3100-3200 through a ballistic app. it's a pretty impressive combo and potent all the way out to some pretty healthy distances.  Except for energy it beats my 7mm w/180gr Berger leaving at 3100 and kind of whips up on the 300 WSM with 180-185's and I'm a big fan of the 300 WSM.

The lack of heavy high BC .257 bullets has always kind of hampered its popularity for custom or semi custom builds but there seems to be a lot more interest in 25 cals now.  Curious if anyone here is shooting one.

High BC quarter bores are mostly a custom barrel game since factory twist is generally 1 in 10.  Like the .277 options, there just isn’t much support with bullet choices because of slower twist rates.  Notice all the bore sizes with lots of high BC bullets all come twisted fast from the factory.  If you stay with calibers like .224, 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, and .308, you’ll have more options.

I’m a fan of .257 for no other reason than it’s different.  I have a .257 Roberts and I just use 115gr Partitions since it’s just a hunting rifle.  Been thinking a long time about building a 25 Souper with an 8 twist.

I have 300pcs of new ADG 6.5 SAUM brass that I think would make for a easy peasy 25 SAUM.  Bartlein 8tw barrel should be here in a couple weeks and when it arrives I'll have everything I need except the most important part, the receiver, and for that I'm leaning heavily toward a BAT Igniter.  I'll start off with the new Hornady 134 ELD-M and something like N565 or RL26.  Maybe N570 but I'm not sure if I can get enough of those big fat kernels in the case to get the velocity up before I run out of room in the case.  :dunno:

Somewhere in my collection of old gun magazines is an article about a custom 25 WSM.  Ive thought of scratching that itch.
