Are you having to go as far as they were last year to get to the fish?  Last year they were going straight out anywhere from 20-30 miles.  That's a pretty long boat ride and a lot of fuel.  The last few years you had to go 20+ miles, usually straight out, to find the fish hopefully this year they're in a little closer.  The days of fishing shallower waters, not to far off the beach, are likely long gone.

We were probably 20 miles out, great fishing though. I've been out twice so far this year and the boats limited everyone pretty quickly. I went with Deep sea charters, been using them for a few years now with no complaints. I usually go out on the Sudsy because its only a 6 person boat and not crowded.

Last year they were at about 420 feet which is about 20-25 miles out.  So far this year the fish have been 220-260 which is maybe 12-14 miles out.  Takes a bit over on hour to get to 20 miles out depending on conditions.

We were fishing no more than 150 feet deep both times I went out, got a lot of them trolling at 25 to 50 feet. It worked just fine
