Moose hunting books?
« on: June 28, 2023, 07:03:58 PM »
Does anyone have a recommendation for moose hunting books or any other reading material? Behavior, biology, etc. If there's anything that is specific to Shiras then that's a double bonus. I want to learn as much as I can before scouting/my hunt starts.

Oh stop rubbing it in.   :chuckle:

No seriously I don't know of any books, but from my experience they aren't very hard to find or hunt during the rut. Never been on a late hunt for them, but pretty easy to kill early. Packing them out is a different story though.
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.

I’ve been fortunate to have accompanied a few friends who have drawn moose and it looks like I’ll be going again this fall. They aren’t super hard to Find and or call, they are not afraid of anything so they like to come in and check you out. I’d think you tube would be your friend over any books at this point. There should be plenty of hunt vids on there, good luck!

Triggermike- or anyone for that matter!
Friend and really good moose hunter Josh Judd, owner of Archery Outfitters in Kettle Falls is going to be offering and ‘moose hunting seminar’ this year on August 26th at his place in Kettle Falls.
Price will be $250 per head which includes lunch. Seminar will cover moose habits, hunting and scouting techniques, seasonal challenges and movements, processing, and even caping methods. All day event. FYI- this is not s seminar on honey holes or specific locations of bulls, but more on techniques and methods to find locations and these animals.
Josh is a super good dude and a TREMENDOUS moose hunter and knows just about all the special permit areas in Washington very well and the bulls it holds.  He’s guided some clients that have taken some really nice bulls over the past years, some are on this forum and I’m sure they will vouch for him and his abilities. Here’s a pic of a bull he guided on last  year (Josh is the younger guy). Shoot me a message and I get ya in touch with him to register for the seminar….I’m going to it for sure!

That seminar looks amazing and would probably be more worthwhile then a book.  In my opinion, you've already done the hardest part which is getting the tag.  Read through old posts on here, pm prior tag holders, spend some time scouting for the appropriate moose country and then just hunt hard till you find the bull you want.  I'd go to the seminar if I had a tag in my pocket no doubt.

Here's a pro tip.  On my moose hunt we were on a road and could hear a bull and cow in the draw below us.  It was super thick and no way of knowing just how good the bull was.  So we got a little aggressive.  I set up on an escape route and my buddy dove into the timber to bump them.  They went crashing below me but I couldn't get a good look at them.  I could hear they were going uphill towards the road so I quickly got set up on it and waited for them to cross.  They came walking out and just stood there.  I passed as the bull wasn't that great.  I was within 50 yards of them for at least ten minutes.  But after running less than 100 yards they were so winded they weren't moving anywhere.  Moral of the story dont be afraid to pressure them, they are not going to run for miles like an elk will.

Here is my advise from my moose hunt.  Get in that unit now and learn the roads. Find a place to camp.   Remember that snow and mud will change the access but you can find the places to glass from.  Youtube moose calling.... dont have to be real good to call one in to get results.   Then drive, stop, call Glass  - repeat.  With not much driving - don't road hunt but stop every 1/4 mile to call.  Wait a 15 minutes before moving for a bull to respond.  If you find your bull go after it - worry about getting it out after it is down..  Lots of help around.

Then shoot a bull fitting of the tag.
Shoot straight Shoot often

Learning the roads is huge in a unit you have never been in before. I think summer scouting should tell you where you don't want to be if and when things get wet and or icy. Some of those roads turn to greased goose sheet with a little rain. If it were me I'd hit that seminar for sure!
