Favorite elk calls?

Wondering what everyone is using. Haven't tried anything new in quite a few years, but open to checking them out.

Aren't they all about the same price? And reed or external?

I use an old Abe and son. Why? Because 70% of the people out there are blowing Phelps.  That’s means one botched trained elk for every idiot blowing that call.  :chuckle:

Born and raised call co. Make great calls. Used Rocky Mountain hunting calls for years but seems like the diaphragms are super inconsistent the last year or so, one sounds great the next 3 won’t.

Depends on your mouth, I would buy one or two from each and see what works best for you.  I use Phelps, they work the best for me.

Bone,
Me being old I grew up on the Abe stuff.
If I remember correctly they were house movers from MT.

I use a Phelps open reed and RR Game calls, as well. Both are great call makers. I probably have 3 Phelps and including predator calls, have a half dozen RR calls.

When I’m elk hunting I carry multiple reeds from multiple manufacturers…..Phelps,  amp (grey o e is my favorite), etc.  I use them all depending on the scenario.   My big Al tube is an elk nut tube from many moons ago….still works great.

I like the phelps mini amp blue and white. The orange is a low air flow call I believe so I have trouble with the right air flow speed with it compared to the other two. I have a smaller pallet so the mini's are the best size for me.

Bugle or cow call?

The phelps newer "sucker" cow call worked very well for me last year. Its a close range call, but worked very well my first time out, got 2 different decent bulls to come within bow range. 1 didnt want to leave.

Bugle I use an older external reed (blue that slips on the tube kinda like a condom  :chuckle:) it works ok for me. Ihave got multiple bulls within bow range(killing 3 of them.)

Well, this one is easy, just get a couple of flexible straws the next time you go to the soda fountain. Best call I've used, won a lot of bets and beers with them, and called in a few bulls as well.

I talked to Abe the other day. He’s still tinkering but his days of building production calls are past him.

Thanks Jason. I see that he is selling his business. I ordered a couple calls while I was checking out his site

It might be the cheapest out there, but it has worked for me for many years.  I use the Carlton's Mac Daddy call.  Small, very packable, most importantly, I've gotten numerous responses from bulls through the years.  It works guys!  Don't be fooled by the cheap price.

I usually use Phelps and Rocky diagrams and Rocky & Elknut bugles. Both have great sounds and no your not teaching elk anything. They just think it's another elk.

E.L.K. Power Bugle for me.  Works great, I don't get gag reflex from reeds.

I buy more elk calls than I should, I sound better on the Phelps tube, I am louder with the rockey mountain, this year I’m going to try the BRO tube. I have called in elk with both. As for reeds I got a whole bunch of Phelps, Rocky Mountain, BRO, Larry Jones, and primos. I settled on the maverick from Phelps as my favorite but I think it would be impossible to find what you like without trying a bunch. I think there’s a little truth to everyone running the same calls. If I hear another hunter in the woods I can typically guess what brand they use. A little voice inflection will change that. Some of us be worst bugles in the woods are real elk.
