Best Barrel Vise??
« on: August 12, 2023, 09:02:36 PM »
Looking for a good...or the best barrel vise out there.  I own a lot of savage rifles and am going to venture into changing barrels on a couple.  I want a vise that will last a couple generations so it can be handed down.

The best equipment in the world is useless to the idiot who doesn't understand it.

PMA Tools raw vise with 4 bolts is very strong and slip resistant.

I have only used mine on steel barrels, several on and off re-barrels.  I use it to clamp steel barrels to remove stubborn brakes.  I mostly use an action wrench in my bench vise for doing barrels, easy to back off nut and unless the barrel was installed dirty, they should spin off by hand quite easily.  I have had barrels (Savage is all I do), where the threads were full of blasting media and grease and had to be turned off almost the entire way with a strap wrench.

New barrels, carbon and steel, with a bit of anti-seize will spin on by hand easily right up to your guages and allow you to feel the contact instantly.  Its a simple job, Ive done many without an issue.

Im not calling it the best, Im just showing you an option that I have used fo several years without fail.

Action wrench I use.

Remove handle and put in bench vise, good to go.

Really don’t need a barrel vice with savages or anything with a barrel nut.
Put barrel nut wench on, give it a wack with a mallet and unscrew barrel.   Barrel vice is needed for barrel swaps with none barrel nut designs.
