Hope you figure this out.  I don't look forward to the day that this reality sets in.  In your position, I would strongly consider going with your hunting partners....even if it is to sit in camp and share stories.  I actually look forward to the day that I am the camp chef.....looking forward for the kids and grandkids to come back with their game and stories.

I looked for a good hunting partner for years, found one, and he had a stroke 6 or 7 years ago. Found another one, CAB was his username, and he moved to Minneapolis. I have some friends on here. If I could figure out the sleep apnea thing, I'd make a great camp cook.
Do you have a CPAP?  I had sleep apnea and have a CPAP now and it makes a world of difference.  I bought a 12V converter for it and take a 12V battery with me.  It is good for a few nights and then charge the battery during the day with the generator.  Just a thought - it can be done!

As Karl said find something that makes you happy.  My grandfather spent hunting season driving around looking for grouse and the occasional stupid buck that stayed in sight of the dirt road the last few years he was alive (didn't matter where the deer was as we were a phone call away....) but he was always there at his house with the fire going and coffee on every morning!

I've done the battery thing with converter. It took me two years to figure out charging directly to the battery instead of charging through the trailer - much faster.

I still havent figured it out. Converter? Charging the battery?

Run the CPAP from an inverter hooked up to the battery. I'm told some newer CPAPs will run directly from the battery with a lighter adapter (which is a form of inverter, I believe. I got a Cobra inverter for about $50. Don't let it get wet or it's history.

I hear you. I just turned 60 this year and the Doc says the arthritis in both my knee caps are as bad as they can get. That being said I got drawn for the quality elk permit for Packwood modern rifle. This probably will be my last hurrah for elk hunting just because I hunt alone and they are a lot to handle for a guy with bad knees. Sticking pretty close to the roads and my quality Bull this time (shot a 6x6 in the Carlton unit with my last quality tag back in 2001 about 5 miles in) might just be a spike if it gets down to the last day or two.😎

With regards to the CPAP again, when I had a pop-up, I couldn't even get a night's charge by recharging through the electrical system. The rip-off RV guy tried to convince me I needed a more powerful converter in the trailer for about $450. The when I was camping and trying to charge the trailer with an extension cord for hours and hours and still not getting a full charge, a nice guy in a really nice RV next to me told me to get a battery charger and run it directly to the battery. Full charge - 1 hour. And because the charger had a readout, I only had to do it about every three days.

We have 3 or 4 guys in camp hooked up to cpaps - looks like a mash tent!   Just run a honda 1000 watt genny all night - used about 3 quarts of gas from 10pm to 6 am.

I used to run a genny all night. No more. Have them all get deep cycle batteries and everyone sleeps better.

I’m sorry to hear this Pianoman!  I hope you find a way to make it work. But always remember this, you lived and hunted in the best of times!  I would hate to be a young’un and trying to start now. Social media/progressive policies and so-on has really put hunting in a bad spot. Look At Washington coming up with a new strategy of not wanting to use hunting for game management. You lived in a time when game was plentiful. Keep up the good fight and best wishes that everything works out!

Take it easy on lower elevation hunts? Have a young guy help carry gear? If anything, go for a walk with the rifle on the chance of seeing something close? I've seen deer everyone else drove past because they had to get way back in there. Don't give it up completely, just modify your activity.
