Growing up Ford

The time has come, we took the plunge and picked up another Brittany pup about 2 months ago. I was the single hold out of the family or we would have committed sooner...all I could remember was the pea and poop all over the place each and every time we got home from work, my wife and both had 9 to 5s at that point in time, no kids. We now have 3 kids and much more flexible work situations, so we all agreed, it was time.

We already knew where we were getting our next one from and as it turned out, we picked up Ford a year and a few days after we put down Chukar.

I was fortunate to hunt pheasant behind 2 amazing Brittanies when I was growing up.
It absolutely ruined me for hunting behind most dogs.

What a great time for a pup!! All the "help" in those pictures....lol! Congrats on the new addition to the family! Look forward to many updates!!

Working on the basics here lately, recall mostly. We are using "Leave-it" for basically all fo the stuff we do not want him to do...which is a lot!

I was sent home with a chukar last week to get Ford's prey drive going...oh boy, that went well! He barked, yipped and jumped at that poor chukar upon first introduction...it has got better over the past couple of days, he pointed on day 3. We are letting the chukar hang out in the backyard for 15 or so minutes and then bringing Ford out on a check-cord and having him sniff her out. We are only doing this for a few minutes once he finds the bird. On day 2, the barking virtually stopped, day 3 he pointed the chukar, not a stylistic point, but it was one!

I was able to get to the mountains the last week of September with the Ford and the wife, with the intention of driving around looking for grouse. Well, we found one right off the bat that scurried into the thick timber. I got Ford out of the truck and let him run around on his check cord, I couldn't waste the opportunity the let him sniff it out...he liked it! We never tracked that one down or saw another, but it was good to see him stretch his legs and start "hunting".

He is a week shy of 5 months and about 17 pounds...he will double that in the next 3-4 months and top out at 35ish, based on his parents. He is a truly great dog so far.

Smaller dogs are so much easier on their pads after a couple days of hunting.
