High Hunt success anyone?
« on: September 28, 2023, 11:58:33 AM »
Curious how folks did on the high hunt this year.  A few buddies made it out and it was one of their worst years ever, I think they saw one buck the entire time.  This is all hearsay but it sounds like some of the Icicle camps that normally do well also had it rough...   :(

We were successful as far as lessons learned and strategies for next fall not so much in big bucks down. Lots of factors contributed to that: wildfire changing plans, underestimating the alternate location (or overestimating our own fitness), pressure in our second location. Next fall my goal is to find an area with not as much pressure that also fits our group’s ability and fitness. And to get lighter in my gear and pack.

The short answer is that I came up empty.

The long answer is that I didn't see any bucks over the course of 4 1/2 days and particularly couldn't find the buck I had spotted over Labor Day weekend.  That said, while unsuccessful harvesting a buck, I do feel like I levelled up in my hunting journey in several ways during the trip and that was rewarding.  What's still on my mind is not figuring out how the bucks were using the area as well as not finding a safe route into this one particular basin when I know several bucks are there every year.

No luck here. Hiked in to a spot to find out every water source had evaporated and the deer had moved on. Wish we would have stuck around for the snow/rain maybe things would have changed but didn’t have the PTO with a big long modern hunt right around the corner.
