2023 OIL success pics and stories!!
« on: October 03, 2023, 11:17:29 PM »
The best part of not drawing (I’ve been fortunate) is seeing all the lucky guys and gals bounty! Let’s see some pictures! I’ve seen one moose on Facebook! There has got to be more! Any goat, sheep or moose is a trophy…the hunt is the most important part!
If you can see it....... you can shoot it.

Douglas Early bull. Lots of fun with friends and family scouting that ended with this bull about 45 minutes in on opening morning.

Here is my 49 Degrees Bull.  Had to hunt 10 days to find the right one.  The first 9 days were tough hunting with the warm temps and bright moon.  I just found a handful of bulls right at first or last light with no responses to any calling.  Finally on day 10 the weather changed and at first light I spotted a really big bull cruising for cows.  Unfortunately he got into the thick brush before I could set up for a shot.  Even though they are just doing what appears to be that slow moose walk, there stride is so long they can really cover the ground. With the rain and cloud cover the moose were much more actiive with lots of movement.  Late in the day I was hunting a good feeding area and spotted a cow.  All of a sudden a bull came trotting out of the timber towards the cow approx 150 yards from me.  Going into the hunt I wanted a bull with at least forked brows, nice palms in that 40”+ range and this bull appeared to have all that.  When he stopped broadside to me I squeezed one off, it looked good but he started to walk.  Two more in the chest and he was down.

Now the work began as it was 30 minutes before dark.  I snapped a few pics and got to work on him.  It took about 4.5 hours for me to break him down.  I made 2 packs, fortunately not too far to the road, that night and went to get some sleep.  I got back up to him early and made 6 more trips and then off to a cooler.

I did a lot of research and scouting prehunt.  I reached out to many members on here for info before and during the hunt and want to thank all of them for the help, it was very helpful.  Anyone who draws that tag in the future I am more than happy to share all the info I have.
