Our new layout boat build.
« on: August 23, 2023, 07:58:07 PM »
Back in march we were given a duck hunting boat mold. The condition was that it went to a good home that would put it to good use. With the considerable amount of time that was put into making it they wanted it to get some use. Well we started this project some time ago and are just now getting to the finish line. Our friends Fiberglass_Supply on water tank rd near the airport in Burlington helped us with our first build using this mold.
The first stage in the process is coating the release agent on both half's of the boat mold. Then the gel coat, ours was grey since we will be painting over the top of it. After drying we then laid down a coat of resin, then chop matt, saturated it with resin and worked it into the mold saturating the fiberglass in resin. We then shaped and laid down the Coremat to give the floor structure and rigidity. We also worked in resin and saturated it making sure no air bubbles were in the glass or Coremat.
Our posts will showcase the build process. The first boat is going to be a NW chapter club boat available for checkout, but WWA chapters will be able to hold build parties and with the mold.

After laying up the glass on both sides of the mould and trimming the edges we set up to put the 2 halves together. We clamped them together then rotated the mould onto its side. Pained some resinon the seam, wet the tape the worked it into place. Long arms help stitching into the bow and stern. We plan on opening up the cockpit are of the mould to facilitate reaching the farthest portions.

Great idea and project!  Cool to see it going to use.

I have some laminating experience so may be able to lend a hand at a build party sometime. If you find the need for more rigidity in areas, foam or balsa core go a long ways with little weight increase.  Even OSB or ply can be used in a pinch or as a hard point if needing to mount something without thru bolting.

I was part of the build, and this this is sweet. It will be at he October 11th NW chapter meeting along with the WDFW presentation.

Yeah looks like it has plenty of form stiffness plus those bottom stringers and cockpit lip, just throwing out ideas.

Great and excited to see it down there all finished up!

I know Rick the Chapter Chair has talked about doing multiple boat builds with members in his garage after the season. I could also see putting in some vertical supports glasses in that had shotgun and paddle holders like they did with the other boat build they did 3-4 years ago. I'm curious to see how it floats/paddles and wonder what other cool glasses in accessories you could build in.
