Grizzly bear North Cascades mtg in Darrington Nov. 2nd
« on: October 06, 2023, 09:00:08 PM »
I hope my link works as I don't have a FB account but my wife sent this to me and wanted to share. It sucks that it's all the way in Darrington. I'm sure that is difficult for most people to get to except for locals. And during hunting season. I am going to try to make it.

Pass out bear bells and tell them this

A guy's going on a hiking vacation through the mountains out west.  Before
setting off into the boonies, he stops into a small general store to get
some supplies.

After picking out the rest of his provisions, he asks the old store owner,
"Say mister, I'm going hiking up in the mountains, and I was wondering;
do you have any bears around here?"

"Yup," replies the owner.

"What kind?" asks the hiker.

"Well, we got black bears and we got grizzlies," he replies.

"I see," says the hiker.  "Do you have any of those bear bells?"

"What do you mean?" asks the store owner.

"You know," replies the hiker, "those little tinkle-bells that people wear
in bear country to warn the bears that they are coming, so they don't
surprise the bears and get attacked."

"Oh yeah," replies the owner.  "They're over there," he says, pointing to
a shelf on the other side of the store.  The hiker selects  a couple of
the bells and and takes them to the counter to pay for them.

"Tell me something, mister," the hiker inquires, "how can you tell when
you're in bear territory, anyway?"

"By the scat," the old fellow replies, ringing up the hiker's purchases.

"Well, um, how can I tell if it's grizzly territory or black bear territory?"
the hiker asks.

"By the scat," the store owner replies.

"Well, what's the difference?" asks the hiker.  "I mean, what's different
between grizzly scat and black bear scat?"

"The stuff that's in it," replies the store owner.

Getting a little frustrated, the hiker asks, "OK, so what's in grizzly bear
scat that isn't in black bear scat?" he asks, an impatient tone in his voice.

"Bear bells," replies the old man as he hands the hiker his purchases.

Well most of the people that were there I think were against it. Thanks to anybody that got up and spoke. Lots of good points made. Doubt they will listen though. It wasn’t a question and answer time it was you get two minutes two speak about how you feel about it.two minutes was to short for me I had way more to say.
What I was impressed most about was the stilly and Sauk tribal members that got up and spoke. Definitely against it and against wolfs in their area also. They want predators killed. I had a good talk with one of them.
It always amazes me listening to peoples reasons who are for having the bears here.
A couple people said they just want to see one, didn’t matter if the ecosystem won’t support them or people who live up there will have conflicts with them or people might get mauled or killed. Just getting to see one makes it all worth it. Even though you could drive to Idaho or Montana and see one.

Thanks for going and speaking up. Appreciate the update.  I was at my daughter's Volleyball game in MV and couldn't make it.

Its important to note that Sportsmen and Tribes have  Predator control in common.

I made it, but chose not to speak.  All the points I had come up with were covered by others.  A good turn out.  Sounds like there had been another meeting in Newhalem Wednesday night and one in Okanagan a day or two before that.  The crowd tonight was very respectful.  No one was booed or shouted at. Everyone that got up and spoke from either side of the issue got a good hand of app!ause.  I guess the Okanagan crowd was not quite as " cordial."  Tonight I would say 90% of the  folks that spoke were against reintroduction.  Only 4 or 5  that got up to talk supported it. Sounds like Okanagan was similar.  I did not hear feedback on Newhalm.    I ended up sitting by and chatting a bit with a couple of our local elected State folks.   The NFS had folks from Montana, maybe beyond, at the meeting.

The most interesting thing I learned is that we actually have a State law on the books prohibiting griz reintroduction.  So,"officially ", our State folks can not be involved in those scenarios with The Feds.   So no place at the table to discuss it, " officially."  Not that I have faith in who ever from a state level that should be involved would object to this.

Rep Lowen (I believe)  from Woolly, encouraged us to contact our US Reps & Senators to tell them to deny the funding for this plan.

One last thought that I had whi!e at the meeting.  Over the last 20 years or more, fewer and fewer roads are getting repairs in our National Forests.  Not to mention the ones that are flat out removed.  This denies a lot of access. It makes a lot of places " out of site, out of mind". I had suspected that wolves had a hand in this.   On top of that, we are seeing a push to outlaw beaver trapping in the state.  And a push to relocate problem beaver to areas that include the National Forests in the Northern Cascades.   So now I wonder if further propping up the beaver population is in concert with the bear reintroduction - stock the larder as it were - and a lot of it would be. "out of sight, out of mind?"

Seen a lot of stuff on the relocation of beavers too. I see it tied more to the salmon recovery.
I would imagine there is more opposition to the Grizzly introduction from what i am seeing and hearing. But it also seems like this keeps getting revisited because the wilderness or special interest groups keep recycling the effort every so often until they get their way despite the lack of public support.

Defunding was how introduction plans were foiled in 2017. Contacting our congressmen is the best bet

Well I guess I’ll have to change my mind because they say these bears don’t know how to fish or eat salmon, so they will just have a berry diet so they obviously won’t be any issues.🙄

My hunch is its a done deal, protocol being followed, people being ignored.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/u-s-drafts-plan-to-bring-grizzly-bears-back-to-washington-s-north-cascades/ar-AA1jnpUq?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=a35936fd1ca64cc6b25ef78e1d005410&ei=160

And going out on a limb here, I suspect they'll be as transparent with griz as they are with wolves.

This is my opinion, which I've had for several years; The Federal Government/USFS/Interior Dept... have way more grizzlies in the Idaho/Montana/Wyoming areas than they are willing to admit to. I believe this has been studied and proven. Sorry, I'm not sure how to find that information. Due to the high grizzly population in those areas, many activities (one of these activities is logging) are no longer allowed, and roads/access is restricted. There are alot of grizzly/human conflicts. Rather than allow hunting/predator control, and because there is a push to avoid hunting or lethal removal, they/the powers that be need a place to dump/relocate these problem bears. The North Cascades is the place they/the powers that be have chosen. They want us to agree to this/voluntarily accept this. We are being tricked. Just like cougars, wolves and black bears, you will not be allowed to do anything about problem bears. You will be lied to/gaslighted regarding their presence, just as you are now. Just my opinion.
