Daughters 2023 WA buck
« on: October 15, 2023, 05:38:20 PM »
Opening day was a rough one for us. 9.6 miles hiked, setup on a few very nice bucks with no shots fired, and a few other mishaps. Saturday evening had opportunity to shoot a nice whitetail doe out of 2 different groups but she decided to pass in hopes of finding a buck Sunday. As a parent I was proud of her, at 12 for passing them, but deep down inside was worried she was giving up one of the few chances to fill her tag.

Sunday morning found us getting up even earlier in hopes to be in the spot the bucks were feeding opening morning instead of glassing them from 600 yards away. We almost made it before light but not quite. As soon as we got to the rock pile I wanted to sit at, wind perfect, I looked up above us and not even 100 yards away a whitetail buck was feeding. I immediately saw eyeguards but he looked like w big spike. The whole time he was presenting a great shot. When he finally turned his head I saw he was a small 2 on each side plus the eyeguards. LEGAL! I got her on the shooting sticks and ready. He was just far enough up the roll of the hill I could see him perfect because if my height but she didn’t have a shot because of hers. He fed over the hill and we hurried over to the small draw he was heading to. We saw him running across the other side with no shot. Dangit. We knew he was heading to the last draw on the property and probably wouldn’t go any farther. We continued on. Once we got close we noticed 3 mule deer feeding at top of the draw. 2 small bucks. I told her he’s got to be here somewhere and kept creeping up. Spotted a deer to the left. Threw up binos and it was a much bigger whitetail. We crept a little farther forward and noticed 8 legal whitetail bucks. I got a range on them and she got setup. 250 yards. Easy. She asked which one to shoot so I told her to look them over in the scope and pick one. She chose the farthest left and when he stopped let it rip. MISS! The bucks did t know what happened and ran toward us. We ran up the hill a little bit and got setup. Here they came walking fast 80-100 yards away. 4th one out was the buck she missed. When he stopped the 6.5 PRC barked and over he went! Feet straight up in the air, never to move again. Boy was she happy! This is Payton’s 5th deer, but her biggest buck by far and her first buck in WA. I couldn’t be more proud. After some pics and a quick call to mom I got the deer broken down and we headed out. Best part was little sister was with us every step of the way.

Yaasss!! Congrats to all of you. She’s a stone cold killer.
