Looking for advice on pee-ing
« on: October 16, 2023, 12:02:00 PM »
I need help with pee.  I just don't seem to know anything about peeing.  ok, so now that I've invited all sorts of ridiculous responses (which are more than welcome and always appreciated), my real question is whether anyone knows (preferably based on experience) whether whitetail estrus pee is the same as (or similar enough to effectively use) for blacktails?  I also can't wrap my head around ordering little bottles of horny deer pee from  Jeff Bezos' former little online book store.

I don't think it matters much whether you use whitetail, blacktail, muley, fox pee, or pee on your boots yourself. I've had whitetails follow my trail when I was using fox pee. More important is making sure the wind is in your face.  :twocents:

When you’re peeing?  No, not a good idea.

I had an old timer once tell me if you find a scrape, piss in it. That buck will be back and think you're hos competition. I did, he was right. But, I only use blacktail doe urine when hunting blacktails.

I got a nice young whitetail buck up in the NE corner of WA. I had dripped some blacktail doe estrus pee (since that was all I had) on my boots and dripped a drop or two every 50 feet or so as I climbed the hill in the dark. This was on opening day of early firearm season (mid-October) and there was scattered snow on the ground from a storm a week or so earlier. I reached a spot with 200-300 yards of sparse vegetation and settled in for daylight. A couple other hunters arrived in the area over on private property and ignoring my blaze orange upslope from them, stomped around down below me making plenty of racket and yakking away. Within 10 minutes of their leaving, I saw movement and sunlight deflecting off of antlers. A buck was aggressively moving into a clearing right in line with my scent trail. BANG!!!! Tagged out by 8:00AM on opening day.

This all kind of surprised me for the following reasons:

1. I used blacktail scent but was hunting whitetails.

2. They have a late season hunt in that area (late November) to catch the rut and I was a month early.

3. The buck was definitely following the scent trail and he was hopped up and aggressively moving into an area of no cover with a complete lack of caution. Bucks in that area are usually completely nocturnal until the rut makes them go brainless.

I'd guess that the early snowstorm set something off. But in response to your question and my experience, I'd say that you can use different deer species scents successfully. And you don't need to order them from Amazon......any decent sized outdoors/hunting store might stock the specific scent for the species that you are hunting.

I shot a benchleg (blacktail/mule muddy genetics) that was coming in on a string to some whitetail estrus pee. I don't think the species is that important.

I tied a scent wick to my boot covered in mule deer pee on a hike in. A few hours later there was a smoker whitetail buck on my tracks with his nose to the ground. This was back when I used a rifle sling and he lived to warn his buddy’s

Not sure it matters the species never had any experience other than with whitetail scent. Pissing in the scrapes does work by the way as eluded in an earlier post.

One recommendation I do have for urine attractants is buying synthetic scents. The natural stuff rots (sometimes before you even receive it depending when it was bottled/temperature/etc). Buck fever synthetics and tinks both make synthetic attractants that work well. The scent also stays as fresh as the day you use it even after weeks.

Never been into deer pee and all that.
Well getting older, doing more sitting and watching type hunting now.
I went to a couple local stores, not one bottle of deer pee before modern rifle.
Everyone bought it all.
So I don't have any. Sucks.
Then it will all be on sale by January.

Several Walmarts have had it that I have stopped into. Hit up Walmart. They had doe pee and elk pee and the sex wafers. Not sure what those last ones have in them....  :dunno:

Don’t waste your money. Find a spot ,don’t bother the does,Set a stand.Put your time in. There’s no magic scent.. if by chance someone does is it ,it will be at night. Good luck
