Looking at 249
« on: June 07, 2009, 03:59:07 PM »
Hey there guys I am looking at hunting in the 249 Alpine unit. I was wondering if any of you
have hunted this wilderness hunt. Also I know of a couple outfitters doing drop camps.
Like three peaks outfitters and icicle outfitters. would they be good outfit's to use or
Most likely I would hike in and use them to pack the elk out.
Any info would be great but I am not asking about honey holes I will find them on my
own thanks.
work hard and reap the reward or dont and get left behind!!!

there's been a thread or 2 every year on this unit. bottom line i think is that the elk are reeaallllyyyy hard to find in there. they try to manage it for deer and they want to keep the elk out, thus the more liberal reg's.

I would talk to the biologist for area #2.  They can send you to the right place.  Good luck it is a very hard hunt but is also very rewarding.

Thanks for the compliment coach :chuckle:  Yeah I saw two bears but couldn't get a shot with my bow.

Saw elk but only one group in four days.  Not an area where you can very easily cover much ground.  It's nice that you can shoot a branch bull but the downside is there's not alot of elk there and if you bump one group and mess up that is probably the only chance you'll get.

joebear,

I hunt this unit more than any other one. It's one of my favorites. I would bring a map and a backpack because I don't have any money for horses. Lots of deer and bear. Have not seen many elk. Bring your bear tag.
