Mouth Reeds

I'm learning to use mouth reeds for elk, and I am wondering what reed would be the easiest to learn on?  What is the difference between single reed, double reed, etc.?  Which are easier to use?

I use a single for all my elk calling
we have a elk calling class sat July 18th is about 8hr day it goes over all the calls.
its going to be a good day oh and Lunch is on US.

I use a single and double. Mostly double. the best thing to do is just keep practicing. I used to annoy the hell out of the family when I was a kid. I still walk around the house with bugle in hand. The wife REALLY loves it. go get a good bugling tape, sit in front of the tv, or cd player and just mimic those different calls till your blue in the face. or when the wife hands you the divorce papers.

Too bad you missed out on the Joes sale, I bought 10 or so for 2 bucks each.  The trick to diaphram callls is finding the right size.  Out of the 10 I got, 6 or so that I can call with easily. Those are the ones I am keeping.

you dont all want to use same sounds. need to mix it up. Glen Berry has great calls as well. there are a bunch out there. Rick

Single reeds usually sound like a smaller bull. I like doubles and triples. Larry Jones, Wayne Carleton, and Quaker boy are all good reeds. The red double reed Jones is easy to get good tones out of and I also like the brown triple reed Carleton and the triple Quakerboy. You can also trim the outer edge and shape the reed to fit the roof of your mouth.

I never thought to trim the diaphram calls to fit.... I will give that one a try.  External reeds I dont like because when it rains and they get wet its tuff to dry them out and get good consistent sounds with them.

So here is my take on reed calls. The main thing you need to do is figure out which type works best with your mouth. It may sound funny but everyones mouth shape is different inside, the roof of your mouth may be high, or wide or shallow etc.etc. which can make a big difference on how reeds fit and sound for you. The best advise I can give is to purchase different brands and sizes to find which works best for you and which you can make the best elk sounds with. My father is a good example, he has a high roofed mouth and has a hard time with normal reeds so I got him a set with the domes on them and he does much better with them.

Yeah, it's going to cost you some money to figure out but it's better to find the one you can use all the time and make good elk sounds every time then to struggle with a reed just because you like the way it looks but you can't make good sounds with it.

Also remember, if a reed is close to a good fit but you can't quite get the sound you want from it you can adjust reeds by bending them to fit a little better to your mouth. Always try this first before moving to another type of reed.

good advise fullabull . you might try a cal-tek cow call easy to use and last well, through a tube they sound good not to big. i really like a hyper lip hyper hot call to i carry two of them . good luck on that callin. Coachcw

another little tip somebody showed me is when you are not using your diaphrams wash them with mouth wash and keep them in the freezer.  It keeps the latex tight and they also have a minty flavor to them next time you use them.  I have several turkey calls that are 7 and 8 years old and still going strong.

i have tried out different types and brands of reeds and the mini sonic dome from primos fits my mouth the best and is the easies to use. i bought some diaphrams from elknuts and he sells a gray mini that works really good for me too
