New to Washington hunting
« on: October 25, 2023, 07:10:20 AM »
Greetings, I just moved to Sequim from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska and am researching hunting for deer here. I've hunted deer mostly on Kodiak Island and I am looking forward to NOT having to worry about running into those big brown buggers that roam that place! I've studied the WA regs and looked at the WDFW Hunt Planner and think I have a pretty good idea of what's what. This season I just plan on scoping some areas in GMU 621. I like to get off the beaten path and still hunt black-tails. I'm thinking of finding logging areas that are gated and I can use my ebike to get out a bit. Or not use the ebike if that is not allowed. I'm 71 and in decent shape but because of back issues I have to make do with lighter loads. I know how to field dress and am used to leaving the skin and carcass in the field. Is this proper? I typically take everything that is edible including the kidneys (steak & kidney pie anyone?). So, this is just me introducing myself I guess and if any of you have reactions to any of the things I've mentioned here, or the questions I've asked, I sure appreciate it. One question I would like answered: do all hunts require evidence of sex? In Alaska I've only hunted when it was an "any animal" season. Thanks...Jim

Welcome to Washington!

To my knowledge you can't take ebikes beyond gated roads in the national forest and I know many of the timber companies don't allow it without a vehicle pass.

You have to report your harvest if you kill a black tail deer. In that report you have to answer whether it was a buck, a doe, or fawn (only one right answer for most units), and how many points on each antler.

Welcome
Access is looking limited on Rayonier land without a permit
NF or state land is about it

My only advice is study the hunting regs and firearm laws, I do it every year since I hunt multiple states and can't seem to keep them straight.  WA has a fairly heavy set of regulations and limitations, deer is better than elk but it's still going to be substantially different than what you were used to.

Evidence of sex, evidence of species, access rules for public and private, right licenses, right weapons, what roads you can drive, where you can park, firearms rules (what you can legally own, loan, borrow, definition of "loaded" in vehicles, CCW, etc), plenty of stuff that can trip up a guy trying to stay legal.
